HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Hope your Holiday
season was as much fun
as mine was (WAHT I
CAN REMEMBER OF
IT!) and that the new
year of 1977 will bring
much happiness to all
gay guys and gals.
Attended many terrific
parties, got home for a
visit with the folks and
enjoyed getting many
Christmas cards from
many of you dear
readers. All of Bir
mingham’s bars were
packed during the
festive season. Seems
like more people always
come out on Holidays,
especially on New
Years Eve, and I guess
with the schools and
colleges being out on
vacation, more people
are home for the
Holidays.
If you haven’t been to
the MANDATE PUB,
you must! Formerly the
COMING AT
TRACTIONS, it’s
located at 31814th Street
South, Birmingham. It’s
gone through extensive
remodeling and you
wouldn’t recognize the
place. Very cozy and
ciuisy! You can watch
your favorite TV show
while enjoying your
favorite drink. The
MANDATE sells some
|pf favorite gay
magazines and you’ll
^always find THE BARB
ithere free-of-
fcharge.Check out their
lalmost life-size por
traits of some very
hunky numbers on the
walls along with movie
posters and star pic
tures in mini-size behind
the bar. And, speaking
of pictures, you must
see the bathrooms over
at BUTCH &
NELLIES. They’re a
decoupage delight! In
the men’s room are
hundreds and hundreds
of color photo’s of some
gorgeous groovy guys,
some nude, some in
posing straps and some
in denim. I could stay in
there for hours just
looking! Much better
than looking at some of
the grafiti you find on
many bathroom walls!
In the girls’ room they
have some very chic
chick’s pictures done in
the same way. I was
complimenting
VICKIE, manager, on
the men’s room and she
asked me if I would like
to see the girls’ room,
but only after she
checked to make sure
there was no one using
the facilities. BUT-
CH&NELLIES is where
most of the girls go but
I’ve seen several studs
there I’s like to get to
know better. -
The Birmingham
“VULCANETTES” will,
present their annual
“MISS VULCAN”
Pagent on February
5th., but at press time
the place was not known
so you can ask around
and find but where this
celebrated camp-style
contest will be held.
This is a contest that the
National Lampoon
should cover! Thank
God it’s all in fun, so if
you like ‘‘campy” drag,
mark this date on your
calendar.
On Saturday, December
20th, the RAINBOW
INN in Montgomery
presented the “MISS
MONTGOMERY”
pagent. Winner was
SONNY HOLIDAY and
entertainment was
provided by CICELY
MANCHESTER from
Jackson, Mississippi
and LEE MICHAELS,
former ‘‘Miss Gay
Mississippi” and the
current “MISS
RAINBOW”. The
RAINBOW now has a
liquor license so you can
purchase your favorite
mixed drinks over the
bar now without having
to “brown-bag” your
bottle as in the past.
Shows are presented on
Friday and Saturday
nights. If you’re in the
Capitol City, also visit
the DEXTER PUB
located on Dexter
Avenue not far from the
historic Capitol
building.
They’re open during the
day for meals and even
though I haven’t made it
down there to visit with
them, some of my
friends passing through
stopped by and reported
it’s quite festive. I don’t
get to travel like I would
like to throughout the
State so I wish bar
owners and managers in
Mobile and Huntsville
would keep me in
formed on special
events so I could pass
them on to our readers.

I did get away for a
weekend in January to
go to Memphis, Ten
nessee for the MKA-
Memphis Ball Masque
held in the Regency
Hyatt Hotel. Had a
’chance to visit three of
Memphis’ bars:
GEORGES, FRONT
PAGE and RAIN-
CHECK 11. The Bir
mingham Chapter of
MKA (Mystic Krew of
Apollo) will present
theit Ball Masque on
January 22nd. And
incidentally, anyone
planning on going to
Mardi Gras that would
possibly like to attend
the founding Apollo
Club’s Ball, can write:
Apollo New Orleans,
Apollo Clubhouse, 632
Pitates Alley, New
Orleans, La. 70116.
Their Ball Masque will
be on Sunday, February
20th, 1977. Everyone in
Memphis was very
cordial and I plan on
going to Mardi Gras in
N.O. for the very first
time this year! Watch
out for me!
By the time this is out,
the FOCUS - PHASE 11,
should be open. I
reported last month that
it would be in full swing
before Christmas but
BILL GOODWIN, who
also owns the CHAN
CES R, told me during
the Holidays that
because of the largeness
of the building, that
opening remodeling was
delayed and that the
opening would be
hopefully in the middle
of January. Plans are to
provide shows of a
professional “Vegas”
type format and with
LADY BARONESSA as
show director, I’m sure
their shows will meet
this caliber, especially
with the large stage and
facilities. The CHAN
CES R will have their
“MISS QUEEN OF
HEARTS” Contest on
Friday, February 11th,
and “MR. KING OF
HEARTS” on Saturday
night, February 12th.
Entry form for both can
be obtained at the bar.
On Saturday, February
5th, the GIZMO will hold
the annual “MR.
GIZMO” Contest at 10
P.M. Entry forms are
available at the bar or
by calling (205) 254-8816.
Entry fee is 15.00 and
besides trophies to the
top five, the winner will
receive 200.00, first
runner-up 100.00, second
runner-up 50.00
Deadline for entering
will be at 2:00 P.M.
Saturday, at wich time
all constants are
required to be present
lor a rehearsal. On
Monday, February 14th,
the GIZMO will present
their “MISS
SWEETHEART”
