2-THE BARB, February 1977 Editor's Notebook : .. .Eleven months ago we were shocked by tho disaperance of Pete Winokur, the two fires at his lounge,the destruction of Cabaret After Dark by fire and the subsequent arrest of the owners for coun ter fiting. The rumors con cerning these event- s,what happened,who did it,how etc. have multiplied with time. The inditment of Robbie Llewellyn and the three other men by the Fulton County Grand Jury have' charged the perveyors of rumor words but not the tune . How many times have you heard, “Well so and so knew who did it all along”or “I know he. was behind it“, An inditment is not a judgement of guilt.No ode has been judged guilty of the crime. Perhaps you have forgotten that this is the second arrest that police have made for the murder of Mr. Winokur. The first person arrested was released after a somewhat. less spec-’ tacular arrest. The people indited this time may be guilty .The courts will make that judgement! When the people who nonchalantly tell you they knew all along perhaps you should tell them that their silence for eleven months allowed hired killers to run loose in our com munity. Ail Open Letter A three year old is an amazing time in a child's development.All the parts have taken shape and the child is ready to explore. The “Barb” is three years old and the analogy is very apt.The shape is definitly there,the potential is realizable and the exploration has begun. The Barb has experienced many changes in the past three years. The people involved,the style,the content all are very different from issue one. One thing remains the same: our commitment to bring positive part of the gay community. The needs and intrests of our community are varied and the BARB attempts to reflect thoes intrests.We are a newspaper and our first priority is to bring you the news each month. How many people are guilty of remaining silent? fUt The police are not, perhaps, our best friends.The Com missioner of Public Safety has shown his concern and support and other police of ficials have followed suit. Eventually the! policy of non discrimination will filter down. If we wait until we can com fortably talk to with every beat cop we meet before we take the responsibility of con tacting police authorities when we have hard evidence of serious criminal activities that day will never come. Police authorities are concerned that eleven gay people were murdered in 1976. Director Eldrin Bell of the Atlanta Bureau of Police telephoned me shortly after the arrest of Robbie Llewellyn to discuss methods of getting more cooperation of the gay community in solving serious crime problems within the community. The police department is concerned for our saftey. Unless we co operate they will rely on the old methods of subscribe!
