Prisons, with their brick
walls and gun towers--,
steel bars, and lonely
cells-hardly seem
conducive ; to “love
affairs” arid yet many
an inmate has formed
alliance with another
inmate and played at
the game of “love in a
prison.”
What brings about a
love affair.between two
prison inmates? Prisons
are without a doubt the
lonliest places on earth-
stone and brick and
steel jungles in which
the inhabitants are
discouraged from
forming meaningful
relationships (even
friendships). Prison
inmates sometimes
hang themselves in the
solitude of their lonely
cells because the deep
lonliness arid aloneness
becomes too much for
them to handle. It is not
unusual to hear a
prisoner cry out in the
quiet of the night-and
then plunge to his death.
Therefore some inmates
decide that the single
solution to the problem
of lonliness is a “love
affair”. They decide
that they will eat
together, go to the
recreation yard
together and all of the
other Social items
connected with prison
life and routine. They
act like man. and wife
and are accepted as
such by the prison staff
and inmates.
Such an affair calls for
intensive role playing-
there must be a
“husband” and a
“wife”. They are not
allowed to merely be
lovers! Role playing is a
big part of prison life!
So a relationship is
formed and they begin
to play at the game of
“love” acting out all of
the parts and motions
expected (demanded) of
them by life inside a
prison.
The “husband”
becomes the “boss” and
rules the roost. The
“wife” is passive,
submissive and fern in
actions and appearance.
The “husband” is not
allowed to mess around
with other “women”
(fern prisoners) and the
“wife” must be totally
loyal (or risk a chance
of being murdered)!
The game is deadly
serious—-no pun in
tended! More than one
“prison romance” has
come to a violent end
when one of the partners
was caught “messing
around” with another
inmate.
And the little game goes
on and on. The players
not always being gay.
“Straight” prisoners
often play the game-
assuming that they are
allowed to play the role
of the “husband”. They
consider this perfectly
“normal” and do not
consider it to be a
homosexual experience-
—for they only do this
when “nothing else” is
available (No women
around!). For a “he
man” to have an “old
lady” while in prison is
considered acceptable
by both the prison staff
and the inmates! The
“wife” is considered to
be gay—-but not the
“husband”.
Sometimes (but rarely)
prison love affairs
continue when both
inmates are released
and living on the
“outside”. This is rare-

Another word of
warning! The
bookstores and quarter-
type movie houses in
Birmingham are HOT
so stay away! I know of
some people who go
there often arid luckily
have never been
arrested, however I
have known others who
went for the first time
and were hauled off to
jail, so it’s best to stay
away completely.
I’m glad I can
continue writing this
column for the BARB.
I’m starting my second
year and it’s only
through your sub
scription and bar
partronage that I am
allowed to continue.
You may not know - but
I do not get paid for
doing this column ( All
BARB staff writers are
volunteers)., Everything
is at my own expense.
When I go to a show at
the bars, unless the
owners let me in free
(AS SOME DO!), I have
to pay out of my own
pocket. If you enjoy my
column, let the BARB
know as well as myself.
I enjoy writing it.
