12- THE BARB, March 1977
I ALABAMA AD LIBSl
By Scott Young
Hello to all! Hope
everyone is fine and
able to pay their utility
bills! Hopefully warmer
weather is just around
the corner and it won’t
be long until we’ll all be
trying to tan our bodies.
As for me, I always did
like to get browned!
Many are flocking to see „
Barbra and Kris in “A |
STAR IS BORN”. I had ^
the pleasure of seeing g
the Judy Garland
version at the fifth 3
annual “Agnecian” film £
festival held atop Red
Mountian overlooking
the majestic splendor of
The Magic City. It was a
very fun evening and
among invited guests
locally, were
representatives from
Atlanta, Memphis and
Chicago. I haven’t seen
the new version of the
film but think it will be
interesting to see how
Striesand compares to
Garland although I’m
sure the script has been
changed, not
necessarily for the
better.
Birmingham has
another new bar and
soon will have 6! Our
newest hot-spot is called
the CANDY CANE and
is across the street from
where the old OUTER
Apollo Ball King and Queen, JERRY BRADLEY and
MISTY LAMOUR.
FOCUS used to be on
Birmingham’s
Southside on 29th Street
and 7th Avenue South.
This was originally a
straight bar where they
use to have “wet T-
shirt” contests so
maybe now with the gay
clientel, the
management will have
a “wet jockey shorts”
event. FOCUS-PHASE
II should be open by the
time this issue is in your
hands. Construction and
remodeling problems
have delayed the
opening several times
but BILL GOODIN, also
owner of the CHANCES
R, wants everything to
be perfect when the first
customers come
through the doors and
up the stairs, so pay
them a visit and enjoy
live disco everynight
and dance on the new
lighted dance floor.
LADY BARONESSA is
show director and shows
will be held on Thur
sday, Friday and
Saturday nights.
FOCUS-PHASE II is
upstairs, Downtown at
\YJVz 21st Street North.
Was good having BARB

weekend of the MR.

there, VICKIE has had
so many compliments,
she asked me if I would

latter, I’m saving my

HEAR THAT, BILL
SMITH?)
If you missed the second
annual MISS
VULCAN Pageant, you
really missed a treat!
Unfortunately it was the
same night as the Mr.
Gizmo Contest, but I
was able to make both
events and both places
were packed, although I
couldn’t see all of both
shows. This year’s
pageant was held at the
MANDATE PUB, 4th
Avenue §outh and 14th
Street, and I arrived
really expecting to see
some tacky, campy
drags but I was
Pleasantly surprised!
These guys, the first
time in drag to be
performing for most of
them, were really
talented! There’s talk
about having next
year’s contest at
perhaps either the Civic
Center or Legion Field
to accomodate the large
following! HA. Our
congratulations to
REGINA FOX who won
MISS VULCAN and best
talent, MISS LILLY
VALLEY first runner-
up and best evening
gown competition,
second runner-up MISS
CHRISTINE
JORGESON and MISS
CONGENIALITY, MISS
FARRAH FOREST-
TINA LOUISE MONTCLIEF
THE THIRD as “Judy
Garland” entertaining at the
Miss Vulcan Pageant at the
MANDATE PUB.
DALE. CAMILLE FOX
was outstanding as
Mistress of Ceremonies.
THE MANDATE has a
free buffet each Wed
nesday evening from
about 5 p.m. until the
food runs out. Drinks
and beer are Happy
Hour priced until 7:30
and the free food is
really delicious. I
stuffed and stuffed
myself on dozens of
mini-meatballs one
Wednesday night until I
couldn’t make it to the
T-room as fast as I
usually could when a
cute trick went in.
