NEW YORK - For the
"first time in that
church’s history, the
Episcopal Church has
ordained an open
lesbian as a priest.
Ellen Marie Barrett, a
doctoral student in
social ethics, became a
priest in rites per
formed by Bishop Paul
Moore, Jr., of the
Episcopal Diocese of
New York.
WASHINGTON, D.C. -
Margaret (Midge)
Costanza, former vice
mayor of
Rochester (NY) and a
strong supporter of gay
rights, has been named
to a top spot on
President Carter’s
White House staff.
Costanza will serve as
Carter’s “Public
Liason” and her job will
be to arrange Carter’s
meetings with special
interest groups. After
she was appointed by
Carter, the first
question put to her at a
news conference was
with regard to her
support for gay rights at
the Democratic Con
vention. Costanza spoke
out strongly for gay civil
rights both at that news
conference and during a
recent interview with
the Associated Press.
WASHINGTON, D.C -
Paul Kuntzler, an
openly gay man who has
been active in
Washington politics for
many years, has been
unanimously elected as
interim president of the
greater Washington
Chapter of the
Americans for
Democratic Action.
ADA has a longtime
record of lobbying for
liberal causes and the
Washington chapter is
known for its strong
stand on gay rights.
NEW YORK -The NBC-
TV plan to shoot a made
for TV movie about the
tribulations of one time
Air Force Sargent
Leonard Matlovich is
drawing fire from a
West Virginia Christian
publication, Parson’s
Advocate. A dismayed
Matlovich is asking
people to write NBC in
New York to support the
project.
DENVER - Big Mama
Rag, Denver’s feminist
newspaper was denied
tax exempt status by the
Internal Revenue
Service for “advocating
the equality of
homosexual lifestyles to
heterosexual
lifestyles.’’ Although
several gay agencies
and groups have
recently been having
trouble with the IRS and
women’s groups all over
the country have
reported difficulties in
getting - exemptions,
BMR is believed to be
the first women’s
publication to be af
fected by the federal
agency’s anti-gay
policies.
VENICE, CA. - The
heritage and problems
of black gay people will
be discussed in a new
publication, Rafiki,
which published its first
edition in December.
The quarterly journal *
published by the
Association of Black
Gays (ABG) is named
for the Swahili word
meaning friend. Rafiki
editors say they
welcome manuscripts,
art and photos from
potential contributors.

resolution declaring
homosexuals and
adulterers unfit to be
ordained as priests was
approved by delegates
to the 155th. annual
convention of the
Episcopal Diocese of
Georgia. After an hour
long debate,138
delegates voted to
approve the resolution
and 30 voted against the
measure. “Along with
the compassion and love
which inspire a
Christian attitude
toward the homosexual
as a child of God ..we
shall continue to regard
homosexual actions
themselves as ob-
[jectively offensive to
|God” ..the resolution
Isaid.
FORT LAUDERDALE-
Ft.Lauderdale gays
have announced the
candidacy of Roger
Luckett,a 45 year old
real estate broker to run
for mayor in that city's
upcoming election. The
election is a “free for
all” with 19 candidates
running for five seats as
city commissioners.
The candidate who gets
the highest votes
becomes the mayor. A
high pay turnout could
assure the election of
Luckett as one of the
commissioners.

HENDERSON, N.C.-
MOTHER EARTH
NEWS, the mass cir
culation magazine of
rural life styles, has
rejected an ad for
RFD,the “magazine for
country faggots.” The
refusal marks the
second time that
MOTHER EARTH -
usually identified as the
voice of the 60’s “Back
to the Land” counter
culture has refused an
ad for RFD’ No reason
was given for the
current rejection, but
after the first
refusal, the newspaper
noted that some of its
readers were “little old
ladies in tennis shoes.”
ALEXANDRIA, LA. -
This city’s only gay
lounge, The Lodge, has
undertaken a move to
formally close its doors
to the city’s Black gays.
Exercising a private
club charter obtained
two years ago, most of
the club’s members are
reportedly backing the
move to keep Black
gays and other Blacks
out of the downtown
club.

Court Judge Wilbur
Dettmar easily could be
judged poor sport of the
year. Dettmar, who
made little secret of his
dislike for gays in his
years on the bench was
defeated for re-election
after active opposition
by the city’s gays. “The
goddamn queers beat
me,” he told a Los
Angles paper.
WASHINGTON, D.C. -
In its first decision
sympathetic to gay
people since last
March’s sanctioning of
state sodomy laws, the
U.S. Supreme Court
vacated a lower ruling
that upheld the firing of
a gay civil servant. On
January io, the
Supreme Court sent the
case of Seattle clerk-

Ft. Lauderdale: In
early December of 1976,
the Mayor of Ft.
Lauderdale in reac
tionary fashion called
for a grand jury in
vestigation of
homosexual businesses
and gay male
prostitutes on Fr.
Lauderdale Beach; The
mayor was upset about
the fact taht Gay
nightclubs and gay
hotels were in operation
on the famous beach
strip in Ft. Lauderdale.
However, his hip
shooting brought a
strong and militant
protest from the gay
community in the
formation of the
Broward Coalition for
the Humanistic Rights
of Gays. Early meetings
of the coalition at
tracted upwards of a 100
gay activists from many

community in Broward
County. The coverage in
South Florida
newspapers was quite
extensive and put forth
the issue of Gay Rights
to hundreds of
thousands in a series of
three front page
newspaper articles
Shaw indicated at that
time that the way to rid
the beach of gay male
prostitution was to stop,
the ' “proliferation” of
gays and businessed
which cater to them and
attempted to launch a
full scale attack on the
