[ALABAMA AID MRS
By Scott Young
Happy Summertime
to you! Hope everyone
is enjoying the weather
and the many social
activities that summer
b»ings. First, let me
apologize to MIKE
McCANN for a
statement I made last
month. I was talking
about rumors of another
gay bar, and what I did
not know when I made
that statement was that
Mike and Associates
ARE bringing another
bar to Birmingham. The
name will be BELLE
WHATLINGS and the
opening should be
around the last of June.
It will be Downtown and
from reports, it should
be second only to
TARA! Mike was
manager of the Coming
Attractions which later
changed in name to the
Mandate Pub and is
now a straight bar.
On Saturday, May 7,
the GIZMO had a
benefit show to raise
money for the Dade
County Coalition in their
fight against Anita
Bryant. All door
proceeds were sent to
Miami and such
talented performers as
CHARLOTTE CAN-
TRELLE. MISTY
BLACK. STEPHANIE
RODRIGUEZ. RACHEL
l>c CARLO. DESEREE
AND “BUBBLES” La
RUE provided a terrific
show. One of the
highlights was
Charlotte’s “Dolly
Parton” which brought
the house down. A
friend from Nashville
was visiting me and
knew the “buxom”
beauty of country music
personally. He ex
claimed that Miss
Cantrelle’s act was one
of the finest im
personations he had
ever seen! A total of
300.00 was raised. This
may not seem much
compared to the 4.000.00
we hear Atlanta raised
but every little bit helps
and we have to tip our
hats to JERRY
BRADLEY at the
GIZMO for doing the
benefit at his bar.
Incidentally, the GIZMO
is now having shows
each Friday and
Saturday nights with
most of the above
performers and GAY
HOLIDAY. Each
Monday at the GIZMO
is “two-for-one night”
with draft beer just 35
and mixed drinks two-
for-one beginning at 10
p.m. Something new on.
Wednesday nights from
io p.m. to 1 a.m. is
draft beer for the same
low price with drawings
for free Italian suppers
at one of Birmingham’s
best restaurants,
PALITINO’S.
Well, the BIR
MINGHAM APOLLO
Club did it again! On
Sunday May 15, they
held a supper that was
out of4his world! BYOB
cocktails began at 6:00
p.m. and supper was
supposed to begin at
7:30. Although it was
over an hour late, we
have to admit the time
waiting and drinking
made everyone even
more hungry and the
food was worth it! On
Friday June 3 the Club
had their “ MISS
APOLLO” Pageant at
FOCUS - PHASE II and
on Saturday night, June
4. the “MR. APOLLO”
Contest at the GIZMO.
Too late for my
deadline but I’ll fill you
in next month.
Saturday, May 21, we
motored to Montgomery
for the “MR. GAY
ALABAMA” Contest,
held at the RAINBOW
LOUNGE. Again,
RAYMOND and TOM
• oiled out the red carpet
for yours turly. The
winners were: First
place TOMMY
Bill Goodin, owner of the Focus-Phase II, inirodaces
his parents • Mr. and Mrs. J.R. Goodin
TOUSSIANT First
runner-up R.C. COLA
and second runner-up
MIKE GAINES. Special
entertainment was
provided by emcee
MELANIE MIGNON,
and by special guest,
LADY B.J. from Bir
mingham. As we
reported several months
ago, the RAINBOW now
has a liquor license so
you don’t have to
“brown-bag” it
anymore. Next time
you’re on the Capital
City stop by. They’re
located at 305 Randolph
Street.
Birmingham (and the
State) has a new
organization. Founded
and headed by Alan
Handleman (who
founded EAGLE in
Auburn). Alan moved to
Birmingham and started
LAM DA. IN
CORPORATED. The
purpose of which is to
promote and sponsor
social events, to
promote and defend the
legal rights and civil
liberties of homosexuals
and bisexual men and
women within the State
of Alabama, among
other causes. Anyone

On Saturday May
28th, the GIZMO will
present the “MISS GAY
BIRMINGHAM”
Pageant. Special guest
M.C. will be the dizzy,
(I MEAN BUSY )
PHILLIS KILLER from
Atlanta. Contest time is
10 p.m.
Visited with BILL,
CHUCK and TOM at the
FOCUS-PHASE II a few
Friday nights ago and
fell in love (AGAIN)
several times. Really
saw some gorgeous,
hunky young numbers
there. The FOCUS has a
small bar adjoining the
large one (this is what
thev use during week
days for Happy Hour)
and it’s a most con
venient and cruisy place
to sit and watch people
entering and coming
from the bathrooms! SO
PVE HEARD! If you’re
not into shows, the
smaller bar is a good
place to sit and relax
and sandwiches are
available. LADY
BARONESSA is still
the show director and
BARRY MARLOW still
enhances the stage,
along with ANGEL ST.
JOHN, RHONDA
REDDY. RASHAWN
MARZETTE. TINA
LOUISE MONTCLIEF
III and others.
Everyone loves a
circus! Birmingham
now has a new after
hours lounge that’s as
much fun as a three-
ring one. The CIRCUS
DISCO LOUNGE, 219
South 20th Street is
managed by JERRY
MOON and LARRY
ARGO. They open
weekdays (except
Mondays) with Happy
hours from 4:30 p.m. to
7:30 p.m. and nightly
Happy Hours from 10:00
p.m. to midnight except
on Friday, Saturday and
Sundays. The best
part...they open Sundays
around i p.m. with a
delicious buffet. There’s
a nominal fee, of
course, for the brunch
and you can get your
favorite drinks since
they have a private club
license.
June 1977, THE BARB - 19
I was there after the
MISS GAY BIR
MINGHAM Pageant
with BARBS BILL
SMITH and PHYLLIS
KILLER until 5:30
Sunday morning and
then went back that
afternoon for brunch
around 2:00. Seems
funny being able to
drink now in a lounge
on Sundays. Wish more
bars would apply for a
private club license
since it doesn’t look like
