2 - THE BARB, June 1977
CLEVELAND - Dr.
Renee Richards, the
transsexual who was
refused admission in the
U S. Open last year, has
si* ned a contract with
the Cleveland Nets to
play for the World
Team Tennis club
through the 1978 season.
Richards calls the
signing, “a great op-
portunity for me to play
professional tennis at
the level that I have
tried to play, but which
has been met with so
much frustration that I
have been unable to
do.”
Joe Zingale, owner of
the team, explained that
he signed Richards
because “she is a good
player and will add
depth to the team.” He
noted, however, that she
will be “a tremendous
drawing card for us.”
TALLAHASSEE, FLA. -
The State Senate has
passed two bills
prohibiting gays from
marrying and adopting
children. The actions,
obviously in support of
the Anita Bryant
crusade, were not with
oposition however
Senator Don Cham
berlain argued, “By
making it illegal for
homosexuals to adopt
children this Senate has
begun a pattern of
discrimination it will
one day regret.
Discrimination has the
potential to end only
v/heu our souls are
seared and we are sick
because we did not
expect the irritaton to
last so long.” The
Senator concluded by
asking, “Will our next
step be to remove
parents who are gay
from their children?”
Ken Meyers, Senator
from Miami, offered an
ammendment to the bill
that would declare as
unfit parents those who
were child molesters,
mentally disordered,
sexual offenders, spouse
beaters.prostitutes,
racketeers, communists,
outside agitators, damn
Yankees,and politicians.
“You might think this is
a facetious amend
ment,” he noted,“but
it’s not; it is only as
ridiculous as the bill
itself.”
NEW YORK-Insight,
a publication of Dignity,
has been refused
membership in the
Catholic Tress
Association. The gay
quarterly magazine
directed toward the non
gay community “to
make gay experience
understandable” has
published such Roman
Catholic proponents of
gay rights as Father
John McNeil, Tom
Sweetin, Paris Balducci,
and Brian McNaught.
Edward Prucha,
Insight’s editor, was not
surprised by the action.
“There’s a long way to
go before anything like
an official statement is
NATIONAL NOTES
going to be made. But
it’s beginning out there
with the ordinary parish
priest who is at a loss
to counsel gay people in
his parish and the
confused gay Catholic
who is searching for a
way back to his faith.
When their spiritual
needs are filled changes
happen.”
MIAMI - Anita
Bryant has a new ally
in her battle against
homosexuals. The Ku
Klux Klan position on
gays was explained
recently by Imperial
Wizard Robert
Shelton.‘‘There are
three vast conspiracies
of communism that
prevade the world;
Socialism, Judiasm, and
Homosexualism.
Homosexuals have
strong feelings of
comradeship and it
takes on a conspiritorial
degree. They are used
as agent
provacateurs.” Shelton
charged that “com
munists and left-wingers
have made a special
effort to recruit
homosexuals,” and
noted “Jews and
homosexuals are often
one in the same.”
Brando’s bookcase,
thank you, according to
the writers of “Glad
You Asked That”. Wally
Cox was cremated and
his ashes entrusted to
his intimate friend.
Brando says “I love him
and miss him very
much, and I still talk to
his ashes.” Brando
raised some eyebrows
last year when a Paris
magazine quoted him as
saying, “Like many
men, I have had many
homosexual relation
ships; and I am not
ashamed”.
ATLANTA - The
only thing preventing
BROOKLYN, NEW
YORK - Where is Wally
Cox? Resting com
fortably on Marlon
men from producing
“mother’s milk” is
getting “enough
stimulation”. According
to a Georgia medical
specialist Dr. Robert
Greenblatt said that the
necessary stimulation
can be obtained by a
baby sucking at a
man’s nipples for
several weeks.
ST. LOUIS
MISSOURI - For the
first time a female to
male transexual has
been provided with a
penis that is capable of
erection. The penis
contains a hydraulic
system that allows fluid
from a reservoir in the
abdomen to cause an
erection. The system
was designed by a
University of Missouri
urologist and plastic
surgeon.
1 CALIFORNIA-There has
been no increase in
child molestation in
seven states which have
legalized homosexual
acts between consenting
adults. Dr. Gilbert
Geis, a sociologist at
the University of Calif,
at Irvine, conducted a
study for Journal of
Homosexuality. Dr. Geis
canvassed attorneys,
police officers, and gays
in Colorado. Conneticut,
Delaware, Hawaii,
Illinois, Ohio, and
Oregon. The study
shows that there has
been a decrease in
blackmail directed at
gays since the
discriminalization of
homosexuality. The
study also shows that
gays in these states are
now more prone to
public displays of af
fection.
CHICAGO - Con
servative commentator
Paul Harvey recently
pointed out to national
television audience that
useing the word
“homosexual” as an
adjective, as in
“homosexual mur
derer,” is at least
journalistically in
correct. Harvey said
that the media should
reflect the fact that
“the waylaying of small
boys, and die bestiality
in prisons and such is
sodomv. It is
heterosexual. not
homosexual.” Harvey
ended his commentary
by pointing out that “To
males who prefer other
males, the differance is
as significant as the
differance between love
and rape.”
NEW YORK - “I
don’t think anybody is
bisexual,” Truman
Capote said when asked
if he were bisexual in
an interview with Nancy
Collins he added “I
think they can function
in a sexual relationship
with a man or a woman
because they have a
feeling for that person.
Everybody is either
basically homosexual or
heterosexual. Their
drive is basically in one
direction.”
Why has Capote
never talked about his
own homosexuality?
“Because no one has
ever asked me.”
(’OLLINSWOOD, N.J. -
Rev. Carl Mclntire, a
fundamentalist preacher
who lead a crusade
against a group of gays
who were trying to
settle a sparsely
populated county in
California five years
ago, has attacked a
recent television por
trayal of “Jesus of
Nazareth” as being too
effeminate. “That’s not
the kind of Jesus I
could turn to for vevy
salvation.”
