Was Bette Midler showing
good sense or was she just
chicken? Bette recently
turned down Rolling Stone
magazine’s request to do
battle with Anita in a Gay
rights debate. "She’d find
passages in the Bible to try
and support her position,
and Fm afraid I’d end up
speaking from raw emo
tions,’’ said the Divine Miss
M She thinks gays have
become the victims of the
peace of our times and says,
"When we have no war,
no plagues, no real con
cerns to take up our time,
we manufacture concerns.”
We gays think we have
some pretty real concerns,
Bette
Dear, oh dear, what is
becoming of our youth? A
poll taken by participants
in the Miss Teenage Amer
ica contest voted Guess
Who as the most admired
woman in America today.
Maybe she threatened to
withhold their orange juice
rationing.
Dolly likes us anyway. In
a recent interview with the
Advocate, Dolly Parton
says that Gays make up a
large part of her following
and she likes it that way.
"They always seem to have
such a good time and are
such free spirits,” she says.

Three cheers for Shirley
MacLaine. Variety recently
reported that Shirley called
on show business people to
speak out for gay rights.
"We owe much of our
music, our dancing, our
costumes, plenty of every
thing to gays.” Too bad
some of our closeted celeb
rity sisters and brothers
won’t make similar state
ments. Want to read a
sizzling, paperback that
really exposes Hollywood
(in semi-fiction form) and
has quite a bit about gays?
Try Joyce Haber’s book,
The Users I coujdn’t put
it down.
Mae, you’re priceless.
After presenting the new
Mr. America with his

to San Frandsco reporters
and said merely that we
"deserve to be heard by
