Craig Courtney will now take
over the duties of Mr. Gay
Alabama and Leigh Shannon
was presented her crown as
the new Miss Gay Alabama
at a special ceremony at
Atlanta’s Locker Room
Disco,the Hollywood Hot
Lounge.
Belle's is open and is
beautiful! Belle Watling’s
Parlor and Tea Room,
located at 607 North 21st
Street, Downtown, is one of
the most beautiful bars I’ve
seen anywhere. It’s truly an
asset to Birmingham and the
South. They have a very'nice
disco room where most of the
crowds hang out but I
personally like the bar next
to the garden room with the
grand piano. It’s very cozy
and can be cruisy and I like
the piano music over the
disco.
Some of Birmingham’s
better musicians come to
Belle’s after they finish their
regular entertaining shifts
and work out the keyboard
beautifully. Belle’s is serving
food and their luncheon
specials are very good. Food
service I believe is starting at
11 a.m. Happy Hours from 5
to 7 on drinks, and of course,
they serve dinners at night.
The Focus-Phase II has
started having a Gong Show
each Sunday night. I went
down there one night
because someone had
misinformed me. I thought
they said the Focus was
having a “Dong” show and I
went down expecting to see
some groovy studs letting it
all hang out! But, as it turned
out, the talent for the
majority was pretty good
although several people did
get “gonged.”
The “Official Alabama
Pageant” to select “Miss
Gay America” entries was
held at the Focus. The
winner was Angel St. John
with Roshawn Marsette, first
runner-up and Regina Fox as
second runner-up. Our
congratulations to all three! I
was kidding Bill Goodin
andC.B. about having
another contest and I
suggested that a “Mr. and
Miss Focus” contest would
sound too much like winners
at an optometry convention!
Several on the bar scene
had birthdays since the last
issue. Vicky had one and
celebrated at her place,
Vicki’s. Terry at the Gizmo
was surprised one afternoon
during his Happy Hour shift
by Jerry Bradley and several
friends. Won’t tell you how
old either are but both are
two of my favorite people.
The Gizmo is going to put in
electronic games and
foosball. These are always
very popular as they give you
something else to do besides
dance or stand around trying
to look divine!
Sunday afternoons you’ll
still find the crowds at the
Circus Lounge They have a
delicious brunch each week
and to wind up the weekend
of the “Mr. and Mrs. Cir
cus” contests, they served
the Sunday Brunch free.The
Mr. Circus contest was
held on Friday night, August
5th., and the Miss Circus
pageant was the following
night.Crowned as Mr. Circus
was Rick Maderas with
Curtis Ezelle as first runner-
up and Barry Marlow as
second runner-up. There are
no pictures of the winners in
this issue, because I was too
bombed to get the correct
exposure setting by the time
the winners were announced.
And, speaking of
photographs, if you think
you’ve got the build, looks
and equipment to make a
good model to perhaps
appear in The Barb, and you
live in or around the area,
contact me for a possible
modeling session. Free, of
course! My box number is
141, Birmingham, Alabama,
35201.
Another word of warning!
DO NOT WALK OIT OF
ANY BAR IN BIR
MINGHAM [GAY OR
STRAIGHT] WITH A DRINK
IN YOUR HAND! It’s a good
way to get arrested.
In closing, I’ve got to tip my
hat off to “Dear Abby” for
her fantastic remarks about
ballet lessons making
someone gay and for her
criticism of Anita Bryant.
Right on, Abby...you’re a
real dear! And if you’ve
noticed, THE BARB is now
coming out twice a month.
Your’s truly will still be here
once a month, but now in
every other issue. So, ta-ta
’til next month and
remember: Anita is watching
YOU, Sweetie!
