THE BARB
“They may do things slower in the South,
but when they do, the result is often bigger
and better. The whole city of Atlanta is
atwit over The Magic Garden, the
spanking new entertainment center in the
northern part of town which offers not
only a disco dance floor half the size of a
football field, but a 200 seat cabaret...as
well. The cabaret is going to bring a lot of
big name talent who’ve never before
played the city, like Roslyn Kind, Sally
Kellerman and Holly Woodlawn. The
clientele is mostly gay, but it hardly
matters since __ , ~

OUR HALLOWEEN SHOW
IN THE CABARET

If it sounds like you’re
tripping lately while on
Atlanta Disco dance floors,
No... y°u haven’t
been slipped a “mickie” and
you’re not having “flash
backs.” Disco Artists have
learned to trip for you,
without the use of drugs.
That’s right, the latest in
disco is the spacey futuristic
sound.
The time has come when
total electronic sounds can
reproduce melodic lines and
harmonic chords, creating
some of the most spacey but
musical and danceable
songs. The first disco song;
that futuristic sound has
been noticed, was Slow
down by John Miles. The
vocal track in the middle of
the song is reproduced
synthetically through the
guitar. Now this technique
had already been exper
ienced in the Rock World in
the song.Do You Feel Like /
Feel? in Frampton Comes
Alive by Peter Frampton.
Also the German group
Kraftwerk (who pioneered
the sound in Rock Music),
has produced a couple of
albums using electronic
instruments. And recently
the Mysterious group
Klaatu produced electronic
sound on their music tracks,
adding a more cosmic flare
to the albums..
The disco world picked up
on this sound again in
Donna Summer’s I Feel
Love. All but Donna’s voice
were electronically pro
duced sounds. This does not
include any of the conven
tional electric guitars
commonly used in Rock
Music. Even the percussion
tracks were electronically
reproduced. The technique
usually used is the Moog
Synthsizer and other
electronic oscilating
instruments. Donna
Summer’s producer and
writer, Giorgio Morder,
produced his own album
(since Knights in White
Satin) called From Here To
Eternity, using total
electronic instruments,
including some of the vocal
tracks. Pete Belotte
(Morder’s co-writer) has
since produced his own
spacey futuristic album
called: Trax: Watch Out
with the latest hit Watch
Out For the Boogie
Man Pete Belotte is also
the voice (produced through
the synthesizer) heard in
the song From Here to
Eternity. Also, the Mike
Theodore Orchestra
produced a song called:
Space (which is usually
mixed with Donna Sum
mer’s I Feel Love). Of
course, we must not forget
the group Meco responsible
for the disco version of the
Star Wars theme, which is
electronics personified.
So all of these artists are
responsible for the trippy
sounds you now hear in
disco. I feel it is the
beginning of a new trend in
all music.
