THE FLESHTONES When I think of great Rock 'N' Roll bands from NYC, the three that spring to my mind immediately all draw their main inspiration from the different decades. Of course, there's the Ramones, the band that virtually created 70's style punk rock. And there's The Cramps who so brilliantly adapted 50's rockabilly/horror movie/trash styles. That leaves one decade unaccounted for - and my choice for the top band drawing from that hallowed ground is The Fleshtones. Not that the Tones could ever be classified as (God Forbid) a "garage band." Their own definition for their swingin' sound is Super Rock, which is probably perfect since you can read as much or as little into that phrase as you care to. I prefer to think of them as kind of the ultimate modern day frat band, in the grand tradition of cool outfits like the Swinging Medallions or Sam the Sham and The Phaorahs. Bands like those could pump out either trash R & R or great flagpoCe 3 blue eyed soul, es circumstances (and the drunken crowd) dseatated. \ love Rock 'N' Roll bands with horns (note: Chicago was not a R & R band) and The Fleshtones always have a great sax department to give old Rhythm and Blues or Soul Material the rich sound that guitars alone just don’t supply. I usually judge bands by the hipness of their covers, and when the Fleshtones do versions of songs like "Rockin' Behind the Iron Curtain" (by Huey "Piano" Smith and the Clowns) and do 'em right, they get several gold stars in my book; What it all comes down to is that The Fleshtones are a party band. Of course, not all parties are created equal (don't be put off by the disastrous Jones show at Legion Field a few years ago) - but a great Fleshtones show (which most of them one) is a true born burner. They’re playing this Thursday , the 18th and Friday, the 19th, at the Uptown. Don’t miss 'em.
