AD: Were you raised Catholic,
Chip? [I hold my hit and
shake my head no.] I guess
this is all going over your
head, then. [A wee bit, I
motion].
At this point Dave Barbe broke
into another one of his dreaded
childhood stories. I don't recall how
long it lasted or what it was about (
maybe a chalice?). I never did ask
Andrew if he was happy with his
writing role in the band, but I think
he is. These guys seem like they'd
go with the best songs no matter
who wrote them. Andrew has some
new songs in the set that are very
good and do lend Mercyland
another dimension (by the way, in
case you've never heard the band,
they remind me of Elvis Costellos'
second album "This Years Model"
more than anything else, but there's
plenty of other stuff in there. All
the way from the Sex Pistols,
Ramones and Buzzcocks to Bruce
Springsteen on the ballads .(but
with a better sense of humor arid a
keener sense of melody which is
almost Elvis Costello but not quite)
you know rock'n roll). I also didn’t
ask Dave Barbe about political and
religious commentary in his lyrics.
That’s probably just as .good,
because it's a boring question, but
that is something that he does well
without getting bogged down, i.e.,
trite, boring, stupid, insensitive and
self-righteous (you know, all the
things that tend to happen when
rock and roll lyrics get SERIOUS).
Joel is going to work out just fine.
He has all the talent anybody needs
to be an equal part of a great band
and he's a cool guy to boot. By the
