Flagpole • June 15, 1988 Page 9 "The ultimate manifestation of power and authority is torture and rape." This from the mouth of Michael Gira of the Swans. Gira, the lyricist and vocalist, fills the band's songs with images of violence and dominant forces used to gain power in our angst ridden world. From their inception in 1982 the Swans have always been a noise band bent on velocity and volume. When they played at the 40 Watt on Clayton with Sonic Youth, they put most of the existing cracks in the plaster. (That was the loudest show I have ever heard.) In Late 1987 the Swans released Children of God on Caroline Records. The noise band fury and power of the group was funneled into dark, brooding songs with more conventional structures and medodies. The result was more accessible music that had not lost any of its power or killer instinct. The album's premise of God as a sexual being is turned over and over in your hands to explore by Gira's lyrics. Are you prepared to examine? The Swans are playing at the Rockfish on June 1st. 543-5000 TOWN PLACE MALL 2 Guarantees • 30 min. or $3.00 off to UGA Campus, Fraternities, & Sororities • 45 min. or $2.00 off to everywhere else.
