Flagpole • July 13, 1988 Page 9 R.E.M.'S Secret Out R.E.M. pulled another surprise show at the 40 Watt Friday, July 8th, but it turned out to be no surprise. Despite attempts to keep the.gig a secret, word got out on the streets and it was even announced on WUOG. The six song set was mostly new material that will appear on the group's next album, which is due out in the fall.. The eveftt was filmed by local photographer Jim McKay on 8mm for a Warner Brothers Records in-house promotional video’clip. The band had just returned earlier in the week from a two month long recording session in Memphis, Tenn. At the end of the month they will be heading to Bearsville Studios in New York for the album mixing process. The R.E.M. camp is enthusiastic about the new record and the arrangements with Warner Brothers for their first major label release. There was a crowd at the Watt hoping to hear the new material before it is pressed into vinyl. The masses were let in slowly as the band began its set to keep there from being a mad rush. After R.E.M. left the stage, a large number of the star-seekers departed and allowed a more. relaxed and musically attuned crowd to enjoy the other two bands of the evening. A new band, Lou Siffer, played an energetic metal set that reflected the stage experience of its members. Everyone in Lou Siffer is either currently in the Kilkenny Cats or has been before. Cats Alan Keith and Sean reunited with Clifton Hill to tear down a powerful metal set. The Primates then got up and played a non-stop raucous selection that showed everyone that these guys are serious rockers and that their hard work has paid off. This was probably one of the best sets
