drop: PO box 2, Maxeys,Ga.3067 i. Ignoring unusually
crank stuff, I'll pass the leads on to Mojo and let him eat up
his long distance bill hunting Arthur down
Four-and -a Half: Mojo's opening act,which I missed,
was an Austin, Texas band named the Shoulders. They
came complete with a tuba onstage and a case of Shiner
Bock beer in the van. They even willingly gave me a can
(which I didn't have) for writing something about them for
a press release. This isn't bribery because its on my
volition: I went around and talked to folks who were there
and they almost universally said that they were really good
and unusual and "get them to come back here" was heard
loud and clear several times, they play with another band
from Texas called Brave Combo, and that's recommenda
tion enough for me.
Points made. Now a little bit about Brave Combo now
that I'm thinking about them. They hail from Denton,
Texas, the home of Texas Women's University and North
Texas State University, both good schools, and both rather
sizeable. Denton is known as a musicians town, especially
a jazz musician's: North Texas State trains a lot of the best
jazz players in the world who go the route of academe.
Anyhow, Brave Combo plays something nobody else I've
ever heard does: they play polka music for consumption
by a rock audience. They even get into obscure and rare
varieties of polka, which was brought to Texas (of all
places) by the German and Bohemian (Czech, not Beatnik)
people who settled there in the 1800's .Never turn down
a chance to see Brave Combo if you like something
unusual and enriching: they are one of the best bands I' ve
ever seen ANYPLACE, and you can quote me on that.
South Texas has polka festivals, barbecued sausage,
and Shiner Bock Beer, which is made by Spoetzl Brewery
and Ice Factory in Shiner, Texas 77984. The brewery is just
a skip across Boggy Creek from the Kaspar Wire Works,
which Manufactured the gym baskets in my junior high
school. Someday I've gotta get out to Shiner: imagine, a
town in Texas with under 2,000 population where the
chief manufacture are gym baskets and bock beer. "What,
no ceramic doorknob factory?" I hear you lament. I'll have
to get there and find out: stay tuned. I oughtta mention
"Miss Cede" here: when Kozmas Spoetzl died, his
daughter, Cecelie took over the brewery and ran it until
about 1960 when she retired. Just as a friend of mine is the
only female member of the Georgia Lumber Dealers
Association, so was "Miss Cede" the only female brewery
president in America during her tenure in the 40's and
50's. I applaud them both, and since "Miss Cede" died
about 1978 at a ripe old age, I shall doubly laud my
groundbreaking friend, who is close at hand about now.
We need more trailblazers, folks: that's why I mention
interesting people, places and things here— and espe
cially trailblazing music. All the rest is another story, and
given due time and space, it will be told.
New space for an old friend.
