My Musical
Ramblings...
You know the music business is really the pits sometimes. It can
be fun and rewarding, but more often it is just a big ball of egos and
hassles. I have been involved in other businesses before, and I even
. have a degree in business. Normal business procedure just does
not apply in regards to music. I feel that there are more inherent
problems in the music business than any other. You are having to
deal with questionable charectors (promoters, club owners, musi
cians, managers, attorneys, ect.) and artists who are not very
business minded or reliable, along with fans or patrons who are
sometimes animalistic or drunk or Mark David Chapmans in dis
guise. There are also physical problems such as P.A., lighting, and
instrument malfunction. There are regulatory confrontations with the
fire marshall, noise ordinances, and liquor laws. Feople involved
with music business also have to deal with record companies and
their ececutives. They have to fight to get airplay and gigs. They
have to deal with tne press (see article on Dan Mathews in this issue)
and its whims.
You know for every band that gets a gig here in Athens on any
given night there are probably a hundred that tried to and did not.
For every band that has an album released there are at least a
thousand that never will. For every band that makes it there are
probably a hundred thousand that will not. Why do they do it? And
why do the people who don't even get to perform (DJs, soundmen,
roadies, managers, club workers, producers, ect.) do it? They love
music, they want to be near it and do as much as they can with it.
These are special people and they are as much a part of the music
world as any rock/pop superstar. Thank them when ever you get the

chance.
Besides doing this magazine, I have the painful task of booking
a nightclub. It is hard both for me and the people trying to get their
band booked. I had a band last week called the Vulgar Boatmen that
left a message on my machine with their phone number that said"not
that you will caii us back because it’s Athens.” I also book a band
and I get the pleasure of cold-calling clubs all over, too. These folks
in the Vulgar Boatmen need to learn something-nobody calls you
back anywhere unless you are good enough to call back. Club
booking agents cannot spend the time or the money to call back
everyone that leaves a message. They are deluged with messages
every day. There are too many bands out there and only a few places
in most towns to play. It is an incredibley competativeand downright
dirty business booking bands. People bug me when I am out at
dinner, late at night at home, when I am working the door at the club,
and even when I am stopped at a red light. I have some sympathy
for these people because I can’t even get Dan Nolan (Cotton Club,
the Point) to call me back. I thought there was a thing called club
courtesy, but I guess it doesn’t apply to booking. Maybe he just
doen't call back because he owes me money, but the point is I know
how tough it is to get a gig, but hey, welcome to the music business.
