Ramblin’ about that thing...
Flagpole is a free press. We accept
things from many different sources and we
print them, that does not mean that we
agree with what is written. Because of one
person's opinion, in this case Dennis
Greenia, it is not fair to ostracize the whole
magazine. Dan Matthews chose to do so in
his rebuttal last week.
Betsy Shearron, editor of Classic City
Live, chose to do an editorial about some
thing other than what she saw on TV and
decided to jump in to the Dan Mathews
melee. Unfortunately, she, like several other
Dan supporters, does not know all the facts
or has been mislead by Dan to think he did
no wrong. The facts are that Dan was first
told by Jim Stacey of the Downstairs that the
Mudd Puppies were playing there under the
psuedonym “Boot Lip” and asked him
“Please, Do not say anything about it.” He
told Jim that he would not. Lie #1. He read
the word "Pups" listed on a Saturday on my
40 Watt Club calander when I was not in my
office. A few days later at the Flagpole
office, I told him in front of a roomful of
people (including Dennis) that the Mudd
Puppies were playing that night as “Laying
Pipe", but that they did not want anyone to
print it. He said he would not. Lie #2. He
printed the information anyway, and when
confronted by Dennis about the matter he
claimed he never promised not to print it. Lie
#3. When confronted by me about it, not
only did he deny that he promised not to
print the information (Lie #4), but in his

desire to defend himself, he went on the
offensive and verbally attacked me. I told
him that since he was so upset we should
talk about it later. Dan again claimed he did
not promise anything and that he owed it to
“His public” to print the information. Lie #5.
At this point, we were all mad at Dan, but
only Dennis chose to write something about
the matter. What he wrote seemed rather
harsh, but Dennis was really angry. The
main problem about the editorial was that it
did not list the lies Dan had told to cause
such anger, allowing Dan to tell people that
there was no basis for the attack on him.
Untold # of lies. Dan’s instant martyr recipe.
Enter Betsy, being an upstanding sort,
she feels the need to support her writer, who
is, according to Dan, being unjustly
slammed. She did not talk to Dennis, or Jim,
or me, but printed an editorial based on
information from the horse’s mouth, Dan
Mathews. To top it off, she accused me of
giving Dan a "public tongue lashing” at the
40 Watt, when it was the other way around-
Dan verbally attacked me. Tha\ v is the last lie
I am gcing to take, and that is why I am
writing this to set the record straight. People
have wondered what the big deal is, and
why we have gotten so upset. Everyone one
hates being lied to, that is bad enough. To
have the tables turned by the cuiprit and
made to be the villians is more than we can
take. Since this whole affair Dan has talked
to Dennis and I on separate occassions,
and admitted that he broke his word. Now all
that remains is for him to fess up to his editor
and u his public.”
