dedicated, fiercely concentrated musicians
whose common focus is “Heart and Brain
Raw”: Seven powerful tracks of heavy
weight, ambitious, complex, progressive
hard r and r with a jazzy, virtually improvisa-

changes in tone, inflection, time signature,
modulation of volume and instrumental in
tensity, rhythmic harmony; cohesive mood
of dark and foreboding fear, anger, desper
ate brooding on inner pain and confusion,
with an urgency and force of expression
bordering on lunacy. I was evefoped a
number of times by the chaotic release
offered in this record, swept away by the
insistent, frighteningly reasonable voice in
its considered dwelling on matters of the
abyss, in which I was compelled to see
burning puddles of bloody oil reflecting the
Civil War, the Second Coming and bad
television news, propelled into thinking
near-hysterically about the black-and-blue, ;
green-gray nexus between conscious eiu-
siveness and the crumbling fortresses of
The Age of Reason.
This band may as well be the welcoming
committee for the Four Horsemen. Sam, the
heart, with casual finesse invoking the flow
on drums. Curtis, the brain, surging with
violent magnetic storms of solar power on
lead guitar. Hofer. the razorslice voice of
conscience, tracing a fine, tremulous line
throbbing with tormented doubt and right
eous indignation.

effects and some nicely-done experimental
touches shaded by dissonance, shot
through with new wave energy and neo-folk
imagery sketched in wry, ironic, occasion
ally tongue-in-cheek turns of lyrical phras
ing, Vanilla Trainwreck is a hard-driving,
upbeat, fast-paced outfit rife with entertain
ment value and bright with promise. I mis
sed them when they opened for fellow North
Carolinian hinterlanders Doubts Even Here,
but judging by their just-released four-song
EP cassette, “Santaclaustrophibia", they
should be a fun and interesting band to
keep tabs on. Especially good is the final
cut, “Naked on a Train”, which starts slow
and builds to a cresendo.
