Toast Riff!
Toast, Athens’ premiere instrumental
power trio, will provide riffs galore for you
hot sweaty Athenians on Tuesday, July 17th
at the 40 Watt. Can’t never get enough of
those riffs, can you? Toast is one of the only
Athens bands that can say they’ve played in
such remote places as Albuquerque, NM,
Jackson, MS, Providence, Rl, and Balti
more, MD, to name a few. Fresh from
rocking the USA. Toast has returned to rock
Athens once more, and with them they’ve
brought the Acorns, a delightful quartet
from Omaha, Nebraska that you can read
about elsewhere in this issue. That’s it. I
wanna hear it... .
NMS 11: A Preview
This was written in Radio Shack. I’d
like to thank the staff for graciously allow
ing me to be pc*d five dollars an hour to
type this article. Here is a little pre new
music seminar article for you Flagpole
readers. On Friday the 13th I’ll be hitting
Kennedy airport. I’ve got my Walkman
ready. Got my phone book ready. Plenty
of pens, but unfortunately my plane ticket
was inadvertently mailed to the wrong
address. Anyway, I’m going to the New
Music Seminar. NMS is Friday night. They
will be showcasing for over 4500 represen
tatives plus anyone in New York City who
feels like going. Besides the shows that a
reporter can go to for free there are also
high priced shows. I’ll probably attend one
or two of those. Some local acts will be up
there. Alphabetically they are: The Jody
Grind, Follow For Now, Lava Love, Wide
spread Panic, and Athens own Vic Chest-
nutt and the Open Fires. A few of the bands
on my list to see are: Big Dipper, Blake
Babies, Das Damen, Die Krutzen, Bullet La
Volta, and Christmas. They’ll be lots of rap
artists including Digital Underground.
Saturday Night at the Palladium there is a
special show highlighting Spain’s contri
bution to New Music. It’s called Spain
Where New Music Lives with the bands,
Camaron, El Ultimo De La Fila, Ketama,
and Radio Futura.
During the day they’ll be panels and a
panels speaker who will speak about things
that might interest the shmoozers. Oh, also
The Chickasaw Mudd Puppies will be play
ing. Some of the bigger bands that are
featured will be Peter Murphy, House of
Love, Nine Inch Nails, Modern English, The
Jack Rubies, Queen Latifeh, and Chill Rob
Gee. There are lots of tours you can go on if
you registered; such as going to Yankee
stadium to see the “hapless” Yankee’s lose
another game. To you folks thinking of
crashing the NMS tapes were due months
ago so forget it! No only kidding. Anyway,
the festivall runs through Wed. July 18th.
Next Issue, I’ll tell you about ilife and music in
the big city.
