Superchunk (A-)
“The Breadman” b/w “Cast Iron" (Matador)
Exactly what you’d expect from these guys - catchy pop/
punk with a couple great hooks. Superchunk should be a
lot more popular than they are, considering they’ve been
touring like hell for the past year, hobody should be
disappointed by this, though I kinda wanted a little more
diversity, but then I'm picky as all get out. The cover is a
hilarious rip-off of Boss Hog's first LP.
Various Artists (B+)
Estrus “Half-Rack" triple 7" box (Estrus)
This three single set claims to represent the “12 drunkest
bands in showbiz* on the dozen tracks here, though you’d
tend to doubt that with inclusion like Fastbacks and Marble
Orchard. Mislabeling aside, this is a pretty good line-up,
including the 'ikes of Mudhoney, Prisonshake, and the
Mummies. Most of the songs lean to the garage side of the
spectrum, as you’d pretty much expect from the Estrus
gang, and includes some of the same bands that you see
on every Estrus compilation (Mono Men, M. Orchard, Kings
of Rock), but there are amazing tracks from the Derelicts,
Gorilla, Fastbacks, and, yes, the Mono Men. The price for
this package is a bit hefty ($12!), but it does come with a
nifty coaster.
Pussy Galore (A)
“Seattle” b/w “SM-57" (Blow Pop)
Well gosh darn it if this isn’t a close to studio quality boot!
I, for one, was impressed. The a-side was recorded live in
Seattle, 1989, and the flip is an outtake from their Dial M...
sessions. This is an impressive document of one of America’s
late great noise bands, and the guy that put this out realized
that too, taking care to put some effort in the packaging of
this 7". An added boost to my collection, for sure.
