editor Steve himself (who asked a lot of
good questions) and myself (who only asked
two measly questions, and boring ones at
that), it seems as though nothing much has
changed since their first single was re
leased, oh, about 3 years ago. We were
caught off guard by Chris’ revelation that he
owned three cars, but our minds eased
when he mentioned that only one of them
worked. More surprises were in store, too
Contrary to rock star stereotyping, he’s
married, and happily too. to boot. A good
discussion into politics ensued, centering
on the first single from Nevermind, ’’Smells
“So how does it feel to be on a major label?'
“Pinch me and I'll tell you"
- excerpt from an interview with
Nirvana bassist Chris Novoselic
O.K., so you’ve heard that Sub Pop
gods Nirvana signed to David Geffen’s new
record label DGC and, frankly,
you’re worried to death, biting
your nails to see if they’ve (I can
hardly bear to write the words...)
sold out(gasp! shudder!). Heck,
it’s only natural. Look at the stel
lar flop of the Replacements, the
embittered break-up of Husker
Du, and the boring sameness of
Firehose, and you’ve got reason
to worry. Well Nirvana went an
pulled a Sonic Youth (also on
DGC, natch) and got a little, uh,
poppy. Their new album Never
mind is, for the most part, catchy
and more than a little impressive
in the hooks department. Sure,
the first side falters a little (per
fect for AOR, though), but side
two simultaneously puts in some
energy and also these nice pop
touches. The album's not wimpy
by any stretch of the imagination; listen to
“Territorial Pissmgs" and “On A Plain" if you
don't believe me.
So, has this major label stature affected
them adversely 9 Well, in an exclusive - of
course - interview with Chris Novoselic,
bassist for Nirvana, conducted by Flagpole
Like Teen Spirit", which is pretty much an
ode to youthful rebellion, then the talk turned
into a lamenting of the lack of any good
Democratic candidates, with Chris saying
he’s going to support a third party instead,
neglecting to name a specific one (but, hey,
who’s gonna support a political platform
based on some long-haired
rock’n’roller’s opinion? Sorry, stu
pid question).
Basically, Steve and I got the
impression of a pretty intelligent
guy who’s going around making
pretty loud music. Not that we
would have expected anything
different, of course, but it’s nice
as hell to be able to discuss nor
mal thing; mstead of the basic
boring usual questions like
“When’s the record coming out 9
Do you like touring 9 What did you
think of the new Mudhoney LP 9
Blah blah blah." Of course. I was
a total wimp over the phone (it
was only my second interview, so
lay off!), while Steve conversed
freely, but hey, it was fun No, you
don’t have to worry about Nirvana
selling out just yet, so now can
you tend to more important things like, say,
doing your laundry, okay 9

“If you've not tried it
I think that you should,
it is fun,
and fun is good "
Boy, it’s been a tough year for my he
roes. I never thought I’d have to endure off
color jokes about Paul Reubens, hear that
Tom Waits was losing his singing voice, or
write this article... but bad news comes in
threes.
The Labrea Stompers and I were in the
lovely town of Charleston, S.C and a
bouncer came up to me and said, (in a
naive meathead way), "You guys do aSeuss
song don’t you?" I smiled said we did, and
then he dropped the bomb. "Yeah he died
this morning." Mike looked at me and said,
"Yeah, we weren't gonna tell you 'til after we
played." Well Shit.

Lots of good fun that is funny."
Theodore Seuss Geisel was born on
March 2, 1904 in Springfield. Massachu
setts and for the sake of the story I’ll say it
was raining real hard He graduated from
Dartmouth College in 1925 and left America
to travel through Europe. He returned in
1927 and sells his cartoons to Judge,
College Humor, Liberty, Vanity Fair and
Life. He marries his sweetheart, Audrey,
and starts a “real" advertising job. working
as an illustrator In 1932 he creates a strip
for old "Citizen Kane" himself. Randolf
Hearst, and “Hejji" runs for a couple of
seasons

Ted Geisel takes a few verses he’s writ
ten and puts them together with some draw
ings. It’s 1937 when "And to Think That I
Saw It on Mulberry Street" is published by
Vanguard Press after 28 rejections. This is
the start of a career that wil I produce over 40
titles, that will be translated into every lan
guage on earth — including the only Braille
picture books — and sell over 100 million
copies. Dr Seuss won an Academy Award
(Gerald McBoing-Boing. 1951), two Emmys
(Halloween is Grinch Night, 1977; TheGrmch
Grinches the Cat in the Hat, 1982), two
Peabody Awards (How the Grinch stole
Christmas and Horton Hears a Who. 1971),
and a Pulitzer Prize in 1984
“/ would like to take this opportunity to
thank the two men who have been most
influential in my life Thank you Mr
Higgins and Mr Smirnoff"
Enough of this boring stuff An article
about Dr. Seuss in no way honors him the
way I wanted to I wanted to sit down and
make everyone feel the sense of loss I feel
I wanted to have everyone feel like crying
every time they remembered he was gone
I wanted to have everyone read this and see
that there would never be another Dr Seuss
book...ever...and then I realized that that’s
no way to pay tribute to a man who said my
tattoos were “Supertattooriffik *
The only way I could convey the emotion
of this event is to sit here and type (and try
to keep from crying), and later on I’ll go
home and draw a special cover for this
issue and then take the chance to fucking
bawl my head off. Di. Seuss is dead He
died. Never thought it would ever happen
but it did. He died at home, that's good. He
died when he was still sharp as a tack, that’s
real good. He died and it affects me worse
than the death of my Grandmother, and
that’s strange...but my Grandmother didn’t
write “One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue
Fish." and so it’s not that cryptic
Then he said, “That is that"
And then he was gone
With a tip of his hat"
Dr. Seuss is gone and I really, really miss
