October 2,
Alex Marquez should head your list ol things to do on Saturday, October5. He's
opening for BOB at the Downstairs andif you have alick of sense you'll be there
Friendly Advice
Zowie! By our calculations, every night of the next week, there are no less than six clubs in town (that's an average)
that have live bands and original music, or at least something kinda neat to do and see (In addition, you may want to
escape the Athens scene this weekend and head for the NewSouth Music Showcase in the big city to the west In that
case, check out our listings of places, bands and times.) Nowit's our thankless task to sort through all these superlative
entertainment choices to find the real gems of the evening. Here goes nothin'.
Wednesday, October 2
Careful scrutiny has narrowed it down to three choices
for the evening. Some may feel compelled to explore the
possibilities of fun at the Downstairs for Lounge Nite. ‘Then
again, there is the 2nd Anniversay Jam at the Georgia
Theatre with no telling which local musical luminaries
plying their skills onstage. However, the discerning music
patron will be found at the 40 Watt for the Melvins and
Clamp. This could be the show of the week.
Thursday, October 3
Think Kirk Douglas. Yeah, we know — Seven Simons
album rease party at the 40 Watt — Dash Rip Rock at the
GA Theatre, but the real deal is Sparticus at the Tate Center
Theater on campus It’s 196 minutes of cinematic pleasure
See this first, then anything else you do that evening won’t
matter that much
Friday, October 4 .
A couple of interesting shows Normally we would say
without any reservation, to see Pylon at the 40 Watt with
Lotion This time however, it’s not quite so easy because the
Downstairs has a nice line up, too. There you can see the
Vigilantes of Love with former Mission of Burma member,
Roger Manning opening. If you’re in the mood to dance,
well naturally you'll be at Pylon, unless of course you're
ghost dancing to the past at the Back Doors show.
Saturday, October 5
If you’ve never seen Dread Zeppelin before, then by all
means get it out of your system at the GA Theatre. If you
already know the punchline to that joke, then this is the plan
First, go to the Downstairs to see Alex Marquez open for
Bob. Next, stop by the Globe or the GA Bar for the beverage
of your choice or three, then hot-foot it down to the 40 Watt
for Nirvana We know it sounds like a iot of money, but it's
worth it. Trust us
Sunday, October 6
If you aren't in Atlanta for NewSouth, then be at the
Downstairs for Treehouse. from Olympia Washington The
other option is the Kurosawa film, Stray Dog. at UGA's Tate
Center Theater A tough call
Tuesday, October 8
The one thing worth investigating is at the Downstairs
It sounds pretty mysterious Glenn Lizzy—A jazz detective
story We would try to find out some more details but we
kinda like surprises
Where’s The Cake?
There just might be one at The Georgia Theatre this Wednesday, October 2 That's because it’s The Georgia Theatre's
Second Anniversary, and, yup, yup, there’ll be a party. It’s destined to be a jam session, with some of Athens' most famous
personages I’ll be there (hopefully), and if you’re worth your salt, you will be, too Come wish an inanimate object many
happy more. (30 )
