Really Important Stuff
Here's some stuff. You decide how important it is.
Fresh Stuff
Well, without a doubt, the most important thing I
can think of for this week actually happens next
week, Wednesday, October 9. It’s the Direct Effect
Benefit Disco at the fabulous 40 Watt. Funky, funky,
funky. Get down with your bad self and so on. Your
host DJ's Mike-E-Fresh Stipe and Dr. Def-Jim McKay
(otherwise known as Boyz N the Grit) will be spin
ning the tunes, pumpin’ the mix and bustin’ some
rhymes. Those who attend should expect a suarez
that should make Prince’s recent performance on
MTV look like a Sunday school meeting. The pro
ceeds will go toward financing more PSA’s for C-00
Film's Direct Effect project. Expect to see some of
the current Direct Effect stuff on that 70mm 40 Watt
screen as well as numerous other stupid-fresh (ie.
keen, neato) surprises.
tional, role playing groups or a bowling team, we
want to know about it. The listings are absolutely
free and the deadline for each issue is no later then
5 p.m. on Friday. Mail info to Angela Barnes c/o
Flagpole, P.O. Box 1027. Athens, GA 30603.
Musical Stuff
The 1991 CMJ New Music Awards happens this
November 2 at The Ritz in NYC, and it just so
happens that R.E.M. has been nominated for three
awards: Album of the Year,-Group of the Year and
Song of the Year. It may be sort of a dubious honor
when you consider that Jesus Jones also snagged
the same three nominations. Congrats to R.E.M.
though, really. I’m sure they’ll collect a bunch more
trophies suitable as paper weights, bookends,
doorstops, etc.
Classified Stuff
As of this minute (today, now, as you read this), the
Flagpole is preparing its all new, revamped, totally
improved classified section. If you want to sell
something, buy something, announce something,
send messages or anything, the Flagpole will be the
place to do it from now on. Rates are $4 a week or
$9 'til it sells, etc. Stop by and fill out an ad form.
New Stuff
Along with the classifieds, we're also starting a
listing for clubs, meetings and events in general.
Whether it’s the Garden Club, Amnesty Interna-
Art Stuff
The best art opening you’ll see in a long while is
at the Grit — Wednesday. October 2. The artist is
Cal Clements and the art consists of works in
pastic, tin and lights. The festivities begin at 9:30
p.m. and include good food and an acoustic set
from Opal Foxx for entertainment. It’s inconceiv
able that anyone would want to skip this event.
Bicycle Stuff
Since I started with next week, I might as well end
with it. Next Friday, October 11, the Athens/Clarke
Safe Cycling Association is sponsoring Bike To
Work Day. That’s right — no driving You have from
now until Friday morning to aquire a bicycle There
will be a Downtown rally to support safe cycling
from 11 a.m.to 1 p m. which includes speaker Fred
Birchmore, Athens’ octogenarian cyclist who went
around the would on his bike in the 1930s. A copy
of his book, Around the World On a Bicycle, has
been donated by Talking Leaves Bookstore to be
auctioned off at the rally For more info call 353-
3258. Be there on a bike. _ . _

Apples? Where?!?
The Downstairs presents Bob, but no apples. Alex Marquez opens.
Alex plays guitar a mile a minute, sort-of supersonic rockabilly. That all-
important date is Saturday, October 5. Bob is good with or without a fruit
garnishment; Alex Marquez is not going to be the subject of any dreary
puns at a time like this. Just you show up and hear Alex and stay and
have a beer or some food or a snack and wait around awhile and shortly
Bob will play and you’ll thank us for suggesting you show up When you
hug them, you get applesauce G’nee!!! (30.)
