Body, Mind and Soul is a new column here at Flagpole designed to inform you of the
various lectures, classes, cultural events, meetings, support groups, etc. going on in the
A thens/Clarke County area. If your group has something going on they think people should

BODY
Classes:
A Self Defense Course will be offered Oct.
2.9.16,23 by the Rape Crisis Center of NE
Georgia. No experience is necessary and women
of all abilities are welcome No fee is required,
but any and all donations would be greatly

Sports:
Athens Automobile Dealers Association is
sponsoring a second Collector's Cup polo match.
The event will take place Oct. 13 at the Mount
Vernon Polo Club and the proceeds will go to
benifit the Georgia Museum of Art The match
begins at 2:00 pm, but grounds open at 12 30
pm. Tailgater passes ($25 a car) entitle the
holder to free hors d'oeuvres at the AADA host
tent. Deluxe passes ($25 a person) allow the
holder to access the host tent, as well as two
other pavilions whose catering will be provided
by Trump's and Jenny Mill Catering Bring lawn
chairs or blankets to stretch out on For more

MIND
Classes/Workshops:
The Lyndon House Art Center is offering a
stained glass workshop for adults on Saturday,
Nov. 23 from 10 00 am-4:00 pm. The workshop
will focus on basic and advanced design for
stained glass, with emphasis on technical
requirements for large panels. The intructorfor
the workshop is Brenda Sloan, and the
application fee is $ 15 Registration for the class
will continue until the date of the class, or until

The Outdoor Activities Division of the Athens-
Clarke County Department of Arts and
Environmental Education is sponsoring a
pumpkin carving workshop for kids 12 and
under. The workshop will be held on Oct. 26
from 10 am to 12 noon and children 8 and under
need to be accompanied by an adult. Normal
park fees apply, as well as a $2 charge for
materials and a "pumpkin suprise". Registration

The University School of Music will be holding its
Annual Choral Workshop in the Fine Arts
Auditorium, North and South P/J Auditoriums
from 8 00 am - 6 00 pm on Saturday. Oct 12
Lectures:
The State Botanical Garden of Georgia is
sponsoring a free series of classes and lectures
designed for the general public The series
begins on Oct 12 when Dr Elizabeth Williams,
head of the UGA Department of Botony, will
speak on the pollination of tropical
rhododendrons. Dr. Alan Armitage of the
nodiculture department will have a slide
presentation of the gardens of Ireland on Oct.
24. All botany lectures will have wine and
cheese receptions at which the public will have
the opportunity to ask questions to the botany

The University Center Classics Group and the
UGA Department of the Classics are sponsoring
a series of two lectures by Helene Foley of
Columbia University and Barnard College. The
first lecture, entitled The Homeric Hymn to
Demeter, will be held on Oct. 14 at 4 00 pm in
Room 265 of Park Hall. The second, Women as
Moral Agents in Greek Literature, will be held on
Oct 15 at 11 00 am in the University Chapel

Miscellaneous:
Murder, Madness — Macbeth is a special adult
program sponsored by Athens Regional Library
during the month of Oct. Activities include an
essay contest for adults and high school
students, a take-home quiz, and a Halloween
party at which participants will put together a
“Public Reader’s Theater” performance of
Macbeth. Information packets are available
now through Oct 25 at the library front desk. For

The Sandy Creek Nature Center is sponsoring a
Saturday morning bird walk on Oct. 12 at 8:00
am. The identification of birds common to that
area will be the main focus. No prior bird
watching experience is necessary. Call 354-

SOUL
Music:
In continued celebration of the Mozart
Bicentennial, the UGA School of Music will be
presenting a Mozart Gala Concert in the University
Chapel Oct. 10 and 17. The concerts are free
and open to the public. For info call 542-2782
Theater:
The Town and Gown Players will be performing
the Neil Simon comedy Rumors Oct. 11-13 and
17-20. Shov 4 imes are 8:15 pm Thursday -
Saturday and 2:15 Sunday at the Athens
Community Theater. For ticket information and

Miscellaneousj
The Friends of the Musuem and Friends of the
Garden are sponsoring a Scarecrow Auction
and Costume Party this Saturday. Oct. 12 to
benefit the Georgia Museum of Art. A reception
will begin at 7:00 pm, with the auction starting at
8 00 pm. A celebration will follow with live music
provided by Layne Chastain Call Lanie Lessard

The annual North Georgia Folk Festival will be
held Saturday. Oct. 12 at Sandy Creek Park
Blues. Spiritual, Stringband, and Bluegrass music
will be featured as well as dancers, arts and
crafts, qames. animals and food Admission is
$6 for adults. $3 for children and senior citizens,
and free for children under 7. The show runs
from 1 -9 pm. with a raindate on Oct. 13. Call
