the same thing that they programmed and
they could program it better then they could
play it so I think they were just up there
mashing their hands up and down on key
boards.
C: I disagree, I think they were playing on
top of it with it mixed real low. When they
were doing “Pacific State," he was playing
that like saxaphone-type thing
M: He was pretending to play that claironet
thing?
C: Itwasasaxaphone. But, you don’t think
he was even playing that? You don’t think
any of it came off live?
M: I don’t know if they did or not, but even
if they did, it
C: it probably doesn't really matter.
M: I doesn’t matter, because there were
enough modifications of their record to
convince me that they at least bothered to
modify, but I don’t think they bothered to
execute it onstage. I would have liked some
really weird edits.
M: This coffee does taste like shit.
C: I mean, she's standing right over there.
M: Well she didn't exactly make it.
C: Maybe she did. I doesn’t matter if they
played it or not. So, it was a little too loud,
we thought the Rastafarian guy sucked,
M: It’s too early to sumerise— what about
the lasers? That’s all there was to look at.
C: The lasers were really cool, for lasers.
Lasers is one of these expression mediums
where the laser is cool no matter what you
do, so, were they good lasers or bad lasers,
it doesn't make any difference.
M: It was a lot better than the laser show at
Stone Mountain,
C: oh, that’s for sure
M: Yeah, but did you not notice that the
guitar did not have any strings on it? No, it
did. What about the crowd, the response?
C: The crowd response was really excel
lent. Lot of people, lot of people really
getting off, jumping up and down. I wonder
if we get coffee refills
M: What about, we got in free, right? But if
we had to pay it would have been $13
apiece. I already have their CD, but I
could’ve bought their CD for $13 dollars
and stayed at home
C: and got a 6-pack
M: and play it on headphones really loud
C: and you could’ve turned your TV on
static and got a lot of special effects
M: could've smoked a lot of cigarettes and
gotten a flashlight out with a focused beam.
C: My whole thing with live shows anyway,
you have to be really into the band you’re
seeing in order to appreciate a live show,
because for the same you'd spend, it sounds
a iot better and you’re more comfortable at
home in front of your stereo
M: I know, but if you’d had to pay, what
would you be saying right now?
C: “They saw me coming a mile away."
M: You would’ve been $13 further away
from buying the CD. But your CD player
doesn't work, and mine’s in the shop, so
that’s why we're here.
Men on directing
Jaymie Thornton is an undergraduate
drama major at UGA. He's also an actor,
playwright, director, and all-around nice
guy. He's currently the Director of the up
coming Town& Gown production of the Neil
Simon comedy Rumours. The play will be
performed at the Town and Gown Theatre
Oct 11, 12, 13 and 18, 19 and 20.
Flagpole: Ever direct one of your own
shows?
Jaymie: Two years ago I did my one-act
called “Do I Do I."
FP: How did it go?
JT: It went pretty well. Pretty well
received...they laughed
FP: They did?
JT: Yeah...they did...once. But it was a
good laugh.
FP: So, this wasn't a comedy 7
JT: No, it WAS a comedy.
FP: Oh... How is it directing your own show?
I've done it a few times, and I still get
terrified. What was the worst part for you?
JT: The worst part? One of my actors. A real
jerk. A real not-nice guy...
FP: That bad, huh?
JT: Worse. You know, it's a lot different
directing your own show than someone
else’s. But I wrote it and I had lots of ideas
and just collaborated with the cast.
FP: I always appreciated it when directors
do that. But, sometimes you can create a
monster. Suddenly, everyone wants to do
your job. Most frustrating. And they get
angry when you don't use their ideas.
JT: Yeah, I ran into that problem with "Do I
Do I." I was too easy. This one guy really
took advantage of me. Major attitude.
FP: Are you still a pushover?
JT: No way. Now I’m like...<grow1>*
FP: You are now directing Rumours for
Town & Gown. Any problems so far 9
JT: No. Not at ALL. I've got a pretty good
cast.
FP: So, tell me about Rumours.
JT: It’s a farce by Neil Simon. It’ll be done
at the Town & Gown Theatre. Lotta fun.
FP: You've done a lot of work with them in
the past. What's the deal with them and the
UGA Drama Department? Is there some
sort of rivalry?
JT: Yes, you could call it that. I heard it was
over some lights. They used to let us borrow
lights. Suddenly, they lost some and said
we had them. We told them we didn't. Turns
out we did...Hey, maybe you shouldn't print
this.
FP: I won't.
JT: Good. The whole thing is stupid. Each
group looks down on the other. But I’ve
learned a hell of a lot at T&G. Much more
than I've learned in those stupid drama
classes.
FP: You learn a lot more by doing it
yourself..So, tellme Why should people go
and see Rumours?
JT: It's a high-energy, fast-paced show
FP: I don't want any of that advertising
garbage. Give me a real reason.
JT: Uh.. well., damn.. UH...it's about...
FP: How about we end there?
JT: OK
