The Movie Dope
I've been hearing some nasty things being said about Scatman around town lately. I realize that this sort of thing is best left to the
attorneys of Mr. Crothers estate, but if anyone is so foolish as to say them to my face, there will be hell to pay.
Alps Cinema 548-5256
Thelma and Louise (R)
Call for show times.
Thelma and Louise are fairly reasonable folks,
they just have an adventure that gets out of hand.
Other than a few glaring plot contrivances, its
actually a pretty entertaining ride
101 Dalmatians (R)
Sat & Sun 1:30/3:15/5:00
Inoffensive, dull; rent Jungle Book instead.
Athens Cinema 546-1011
Boyz N the Hood (R)
Mon-Thur 6:45, Fri 1:45/9:10, Sat & Sun
1:45/4:15/6:45/9:10
So much violence. A chronicle about trying
to come of age, much less survive in South-
central Los Angeles. Tough, painful pic-
confrontmg some nasty realities and chal
lenging the racism of apathy. Its also a
terrific universal drama. First time director
John Singleton is a force to be reckoned
with. Make an effort to see it. Ends Thursday
Livin' Large (Ft)
Daily 7:15
Set and shot in Atlanta. A laugh-less com
edy, with uninspired performances, and a
script that’s just plain bad. Gratuitous place
ment of a single company's (Coca-Cola)
logo and advertisements must set a new
record. Ends Thursday.
Paradise (PG)
Mon - Fri 4:30/7:20/9:50, Sat & Sun 2:05/
4:30/7:20/9:50
Interminable. Lush piano and strings score
that NEVER ENDS, not two seconds in this
film is unaccompanied by it. If that, and
wise-beyond-their-years children are your
idea of a good time, hmmm, go ahead.
Suburban Commando (PG)
Mon - Fri 4:00/7:30/9:45, Sat & Sun 2:00/
4:00/7:30/9:45
Why, why, why did someone make this film?
Did Hulk Hogan become a box-office
powerhouse after No Holds Barred? Is
Chirstopher Lloyd trying to grab the market
left by Jerry Lewis? Does the image of the
Hulkster breakin' stuff sound like a guaran
teed laugh getter? There are no easy an
swers.
Starting Friday
Dead Again (R)
Mon - Thur 4:20/7:00/9:20 Sat & Sun 2:10/
4:20/7:00/9:20
In the running for most entertaining film of
the summer. Director Kenneth Branagh
and screenwriter Scott Frank leave a crafty
trail of can’t-miss clues and in-|okes, mak
ing this a film to be carefully watched rather
than sat through. Derek Jacobi. Andy Gar
cia and especially Robin Williams are great
in support, although the Belfast born direc
tor tries just a bit too hard with the American
accent. Great fun, and I’m not Roman ei
ther.
Terminator 2 (R)
Mon - Thur 4:50/8 00 Sat & Sun 2:15/4 50/8 00
Its Amie-rific.
Classic Triple 543-6544
The Fisher King (R)
Daily 6:45/9:30
Director Terry Gilliam has made a habit of
savaging the wicked modern world, but The
Fishe. King goes one step further It’s not merely
about losing one's soul, but saving it Robin
Williams is a street lunatic and Jeff Bridges is a
wayward DJ who meet on the streets of New
Yoik, realize they have some things in common,
and '•ecognize the restorative power of the Holy
Grail.Put it on your “A” list.
Necessary Roughness (PG)
Daily 7:05/9:35
A mostly lame, formula picture with no surprises,
but a few good bits. If you don’t like football, a lot,
don’t even think about it
Shout (PG-13)
Daily 7:00/9:20
Serious contender for that Worst of the Year title.
Awful music, and the lip syncing provided the
evening's only laughs The kids were leaving the
theater after an hour, and only sheer
professionalism kept me from joining them Ugh
Ignore it and it will go away
Commerce Drive-In

Doc Hollywood (R)

Deceived (R)
Daily 2:15/4 45/7 15/9 50
This might have been an interesting sorta thriller
mystery thing John Heard is pretty good, and
director Damien Harris has some style, but the
film's star. Goldie Hawn, seems to have been
strung out on codeine throughout the entire
shoot The plot holes and the tired climax don’t
help either
Barton Fink (R)
Daily 2:10/4:40/7:30/10:00
Okay kids, its here The new one from the Coen
brothers (who made last year's great film Miller's
Crossing) is hilarious, disturbing, imposible to
take your eyes off of. and downright bewildering.
John Turturro carries the picture beautifully, and
the very good John Goodmai has never been
better This is not a light entortainment, but if you
miss it. you can't be cool
Ricochet (R)
Daily 2:00/4:30/7:00/9:30
Denzel Washington and John Llthgow have done
much good work in the past, but this Joel Silver
pic is short on action and long on nastiness
Lithgow's bad guy antics aren't particularly
inventive, they're just ugly, and after an hour and
a half of them the payoff isn't much either Ice T
is also in the fray playng the same part Wesley
Snipes handled in New Jack City
The Super (R)
Daily 2:30/5:00/7:10/9:20
Joe Pesci settled for some pretty weak material
in his first starnng role While brilliant in GoodFellas
and authenticly funny in Lethal Weapon 2. he's
shackled by complete half -hearted slapstick and
lame one liners That's a Disappointment I think
he should do a buddy/road trip picture with
Spike Lee.
Theaters 5-9 (Outside) 548-9460
Dead Again (R)
Daily 7:25
Fun with the dead. Ends Tnursday.
Freddy’s Dead (R)
Daily 7 00
I figure you are either definitely going to see this
film or you definitely are not, and my opinion
won’t matter much either way A few brief
comments; I found it loathsome, there are a
handful of cameos by annoying celebrities, and
be sure to pick up your special glasses for the
lengthy and tiresome 3-D sequence
Late for Dinner (PG-13)
Daily 7 30
What would really happen if two guys were
frozen in 1962 and thawed out in 1991 9 That’s
the question in this not very predictable,
somewhat odd film, Director WD Richter
(Buckaroo Banzai) is more concerned with the
characters reactions to these events than any
action or even comedy potential The result is a
film that is actually fairly engrossing, what they
used to call a yam Clumsy dialogue and a fair
amount of acting class bullshit from the cast, but
its worth a look Ends Thursday
Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves
Daily 7:10
Think about it If you were the Sheriff of
Nottingham, would you be afraid of Kevin
Costner 9 Ends Thursday
Terminator 2(R)
Daily 7:15
Hollywood seeks primarily to capture the
imagination of thirteen year-old white boys, it has
rarely succeeded more perfectly Ends Thursday
