"It's strong, melodic, yet a little edgier than some bands
with big harmony... It's a Byrds type of thing “ — a descrip
tion of Month of Sunday's music, as provided by bassist
Clay Johnson.
Month of Sundays was formed three years ago in
Auburn, AL., by Jonnson, guitarist Al Aylesworth and drum
mer Tommy Prewitt, who were all students at the time. With
the addition of Guitar Institute of Technology graduate.
Arlan Gibson, a year ago, the band was complete.
"We started in this game later than most people do.
Three of us graduated from Auburn and then [began] a
band. It's not like we've been hacking at it since we were
15." says Johnson. However, Month of Sundays is not an
overnight success. After a move to Atlanta and a self-
produced tape, extensive touring followed, earning the
band both overwhelmingly positive reviews and a loyal
audience throughout the Southeast.
Their sound has been compared to U2. The Cure. The
Connells, and Dreams So Real, but the band doesn’t feel
that their music has that much in common with the work of
any of those acts. The most obvious difference is that all
four members of Month of Sundays both write and sing, and
the lead singer changes often, sometimes within the same
song. Al Aylesworth cites their approach to vocals as the
primary contrast between his band and those to which it is
compared: “They are one-singer
bands, but we’re more powerful
harmony-wise...[the tape] doesn’t
really capture our vocal sound."
Last year’s appearance at the
NewSouth Music Showcase gen
erated Month of Sundays’ first burst
of attention, and led to their being
picked up by the management
company Nolan/Reeves Music,
which also handles fellow up-and-
coming Atlanta band Follow For
Now. This year they played the
showcase again with hopes of at
tracting some interest from a major
label. If not, they plan to release another tape in January.
Though the band places a great deal of emphasis on
performing, and they have reached the point where day
jobs, the hated financial necessity of many unsigned bands,
are no longer required, their love of playing live is matched
by their commitment to songwriting. "I love writing songs,"
says Aylesworth, "I love to get out on a stage and play
guitar, but I don’t think that I could ever be in a cover band.
To create something; it’s a rush."
"We do it because we love it", is how Johnson sums up
the band’s motivation. "If we didn’t, there is nothing finan
cially, or philosophically, or any other way that would make
it worthwhile...of course it’s really gratifying if you write a
song and people say ‘that's a great song’, [but] it’s a self-
actualizing process. That’s what playing is."
On Wednesday. October 9. Month of Sundays will be
bringing their lush guitars, driving rhythms and wall of vocal
harmony to the Georgia Theater. If you missed them when
they opened for Kevn Kinney and Peter Buck, try to catch
them this time. Even if you saw them then, or at any of their
earlier Athens’ shows, you may want to check out the newer
songs which have been added to their live repertoire.
Besides, attending will give you the chance to say "yeah, I
saw them back in ’91" in a few years’ time.
