A Direct Effect PSA in need of a disco benefit...
Everyone s gone and left me [Hillary] to put this column together for you in hopes that it makes your life easier in the
upcoming week to make decisions. If you're anything like myself, which is lacking in the ability to make decisions, you'll
do what I normally do — go everywhere in sequence. Check out everything and then make a final choice as to where to
hang out the rest of the evening (which, most of the time in my case tends to lead me to the least-crowded Waffle House
in town). Anyway, lots of music and other stuff to take in this week so here goes...
Wednesday, October 9
Ladies night all over town, girls. Free admission to the GA Theatre to see the Month of Sundays, and free admission
to the Downstairs to see Creation Artefact. Not to be sexist, but for the fellows that wear a dress to the Downstairs you'll
get in free as well. The most important place you should be, though, is at the 40 Watt for the D.rect Effect Disco Benefit.
Wear your platform shoes and dance to spinmasters’ Mike-E-Fresh Stipe and Dr. Def-Jam McKay (Boyz in the Grit.. ).
Proceeds go to funding more of C-OO’s great PSA's.
Thursday, October 10
Bring a blanket and hangout under the stars while Chick Corea and band serendade you with jazz at Legion Fielc
But really, the most interesting musical event of the evening will be found at the Downstairs when Dave Zwart ano Jeff
Mathews of Daisy duet on guitar and organ. A nice cup of hot chocolate or raspberry tea for a coot night..
Friday, October 11
Hmmm...Follow for Now release party at the Watt with Hayride and Stuck Mojo? Davie Allan Coe at the GA Theatre 7
Or brownies, coffee and the Go Figures at the Downstairs? The choice is yours. Make up your mine or hit them all a few
songs at a time.
Saturday, October 12
Flead to Callaway, GA for Mule Day in the morning, Sandy Creek Park in the afternoon for the Folk Festival and then
Opal Foxx at the 40 Watt in the evening. A full day and night of varied musical influences Amazing
Sunday, October 13
Get together with some friends and browse through the fleamarket. hit an afternoon matinee, then head to the
Downstairs and catch Sommerville and Phillips at 9 p.m. What else is there to do on Sundays?
Monday, October 14
Disco, Disco, Disco...ET’s Palace, Dirty Harry's or the 40 Watt, go to all of them, what the heck Or you could head
to the Flying Buffalo for Stormy Monday. I’ll be at the GA Theatre watching Robin Hood. Haven't seen it yet, and man.
watching Kevin Costner is a treat, no matter how bad the flick...
Tuesday, October 15
Take a day to rest. It’s been a busy week. But if you’re still full of energy check out the song swap at the Downstairs
and eat a chicken salad sandwich. They make the best chicken salad sandwiches I’ve ever tasted... :)
Bike-it
Grease up the chains, inflate the tires and ring that bell — prepare your two
wheeler for the highways for Bike-to-Work Day, Friday, Oct. 11. The Athens-Clarke
Safe Cycling Association needs your support so they can continue promoting safe
bicycling around Athens. The Bike-to-Work Rally will be held on College Square
between 11 a m. and 1 p.m. and will feature live music and guest speakers.
Fred Birchmore, author of Around the World on a Bicycle, will speak on the topic
‘‘Why Athens is the Worst Place in the World to Bicycie " An autographed copy of
his now out of print and rare book will be auctioned
Athens is long overdue for proper bike paths, a subject the A C S C A has
heartily taken up Bicycle safety and promoting bicycling are other topics the group
works with. So, help decrease carbon dioxide emissions in Athens for a day and ride
your bike to work or school.
