What Jeff
Heard, What
Jeff Saw...
Wednesday night, October 2. The Georgia Bar.
There's a festive atmosphere in the saloon tonight. The
static of excitement is in the air.
Down the street on the other side of Lumpkin, the Down
stairs is winding up their goofball Lounge Night, where a few
hours earlier this girl from a local band walked in all tricked
out with a blonde wig and the works. Guy near the counter
cracks, "How much for a blowjcb?" So she eyes him real
cool-like —slow drag on her cigarette. “Twelve-hundred
dollars," she drawls ever-so sweetly, all tiny innocent grin
and big baby-doll eyes with false lashes fluttering. (General
chuckling all around.) “But it’s three for you, honey....’
Across the road at the Theatre, the all-star 2nd-Anmver-
sary birthday bash is still in full throttle. But here in the Bar,
even though they haven't broken out with white tablecloths
and candlelight like the underground cafe, there's some
thing much rarer and unpredictable worth celebrating than
just a once-a-year observation for a buiiding.
The Braves are winning.
Mike Pegaush pours some more Killian's Red, watching
the bloodhounds watch the Dodgers on the mounted set.
“If," he says, "the Braves go to the World Series, every
backwoods redneck, trailer-park hick, and cable-pirating
swamp rat in the tri-sate area will converge upon Atlanta like
a nightmare plague of locusts. It will be un-fucking-beiiev-
able." He takes a reflective moment to drink, eyes dawning
wider with the thrill of the implications.
"Do you realize how far West you have to go to find
another professional baseball team? There’s not another ball
club between here and Cincinnati...Alabama: No team.
Mississippi: No team...Every confederate-flag-waving ya
hoo in the mother-loving Southeast is gonna pop out of the
woodwork and descend to get his one shot at being a part of
history in the making....!"
Not only that, Mike, but The Scene is gonna keep getting
juiced by the fever, too, pun intended.
A couple months ago, Pau! Lombard told me it was the
bar scene that really mattered here, not the music scene !
disagree with his assessment of the state of music today in
Athens; but I agree that there’s a legitimate phenomenon
going on in the watering holes. I just feel that the two beasts
are inextricably intertwined, that's all.
Now let me take you back a few nights earlier to Sunday
evening Back to the subterranean coffeehouse-type-place
down there again...Sunday shows are rare at the Downstairs
— or at least, they have been until very recently —and The
Go Figures are likewise in rare form. In their case, however,
you can tell that you'd better get used to it. Paul, and all you
barstool pontificators and perpetual-refill pundits, allow me
to illustrate my point (that you're full of shit when you say
nothing's happening in the Athens music scene) by inviting
you to consider the polished state of this particular band.
Listen to David Ferguson sing — better yet, watch him and
listen as he sings: This man is a pro. Take in the casual
precision of his partner Ted Grauch’s fmgerwork and stage
presence on guitar; not to mention the easy harmony of
occasional backing vocals. Are you gonna tell me this pair
isn’t authentic in the originality, creativity, artistry and enter
tainment value of their music? Or that they're not ready to go
into a studio and cut a brilliant record at the drop of a
contract 7 I’m sorry, but “House of Stares". “Summertime",
"Coffee All Day"...This stuff rings true, and it sounds great!
And you'll have to convince me why I shouldn't be eager
to hear a Go Figures record and see the boys break through
with a successful tour If, that is, you expect me to nod and
say, “Veah, right, I know what you mean, nobody's doing
anything interesting musically in Athens, Georgia right now.
all the bands SUCK," over the next Guinness draft.
