Poster Children
Daisychain Reaction (Twin Tone)
Due in part to their explosive energy, being from the
Midwest, and the fact that they have a female bass player,
Champaign, Illinois’ Poster Children are always being
likened to The Pixies and Sonic Youth. But their latest
release, Daisychain Reaction, proves that creativity is an
effective weapon in the on-going battle to transcend clas
sification
Of all the descriptions used in reference to the Poster
Children, I think that I like "a giant wall of sound" the best.
Maybe it's because I can dig into my cornball sack o'
metaphors and say that they really stacked up the bricks on
this, their second release
Daisychain boasts a more will rounded sound thanks to
the band's addition of a second guitar, but Poster Children's
characteristically strong bass and drums aren't lost at all.
Diversity is key on this 12-track combo, ranging from the
short and catchy "If You See Kay’ to the longer-and-
pensive "Cham Reaction’ In all, Daisychain Reactionwas
a nice surprise and is worth checking out, as is the band
itself who will be in town later this month. Watch for them.

Prince and the New Power Generation
Diamonds and Pearls (Paisley Park)
Can you believe it? The Kid has been doing it for close
to fourteen years now And those fourteen years we have
seen him evolve from a boy genius to genuine master. In the
past 10 years, Prince has become the major force in pop
music (though Madonna and Michael Jackson’s record
sales are much higher), challenging mainstream radio with
every new release. (Remember how strange it was hearing
"Kiss", “Alphabet St.“, and “Raspberry Beret" amidst the
likes of Phil Collins and Paula Abdul 7 ) However, in the a last
few years Prince has been slipping at the speed of light. His
last two albums have been complete duds (excellent by
most standards but mediocre for Prince). The cheezy
commercialism of Batman and the cluttered unevenness of
Graffiti Bridge resulted in many of his hardcore fans (myself
included) beginning to doubt him. But with Diamonds and
Pearls, his 13th release, Prince re-establishes himself as a
pop wizard.
Things kick off with the tremendous "Thunder", a heavy-
hittmg spiritual rocker with an incredibly catchy chorus,
grounded by the famous Oriental keyboard last heard in
“When Doves Cry.” Suddenly, we’re thrown into the funky
Sly Stone-inspired rock of "Daddy Pop", followed by the
okay title track, and the "Bang a Gong" feel of "Cream".
Other gems include the funky acoustic "Willing and Able"
and the fun "Walk Don’t Walk". "Money Don’t Matter 2
Night" and the Earth, Wind, and Fire funk of "Live 4 Love"
are almost as good, while "Strollin’" is Prince quirkiness at
its best
Prince’s new band, the New Power Generation, simply
cooks. The heavy pounding of drummer Michael B. and the
incredible voice of keyboardist Rosie Gaines give gravity to
most of the songs. The best example can be found on the
album’s best track: the incredibly raunchy “Get Off". Clas
sic Prince. Lewd and nasty. Unfortunately, the N.P.G. hurts
almost as much as it helps. The addition of Tony Moses as
resident rapper was a huge mistake The problem 7 He
can’t rap. He's as generic as they come — a human form
of MC Skat Kat And he rums two potentially good songs on
the album, "Push" and "Jughead".
Diamonds and Pearls is not the masterwork of Sign of
the Times But it does stand on its own ground and should
rank as one of Prince's best. The album is highly commer
cial without compromising itself, and should, no doubt,
brighten up mainstream radio in the next year

Soundgarden
Badmotorfinger (A&M)
Lurking within the swirling darkness that envelopes
Soundgarden’s latest effort Badmotorfinger, is a gnarled,
distorted catalyst that evokes a myriad of images. It lot of
hair and psychedelic distortion evoke the mystery and
epical majesty of Led Zeppelin The murky, dirge-like
repetition flows like early Black Sabbath These compari
sons have remained with Soundgarden even from their
eariy SubPop days, but Soundgarden has perfected their
own “alternative" noise to suit the '90s progressions and
attitudes.
Badmotorfinger is a constantly churning, buzzing mind
warp with haunting, hollow vocals and repetitious guitars
that echo and reverberate laboriously through these 13
mini-epics detailing oppression and religious confusion.
Laborious is not meant in any negative sense The vocals
beseech, almost pleading, attempting to shatter some
distant tranquility. The dual-guitar work of Chris Cornell and
Kim Thayil is a blissfully depressing display of grinding,
disruptive orchestration that is almost unnerving. The
constant, tedious straining of feedback is eerie and forbod-
ing; screeching like rigid finger nails, slowly and purposely,
running down a blackboard.
The lyrics are on a more personal level which reveals
darkness and discontent, the best example being "Room a
Thousand Years Wide." This song, coupled with frenetic
horns, is a chilling portrait of eternal despair and futility.
“Jesus Christ Pose." the first single, is a lamenting master
piece of melancholy and emotional darkness and "Holy
Water" screams out at religious hypocrisy with vivid, fren
zied reality which saturates the entire album.
Badmotorfinger is a wild trip backwards and forwards
through all dusty corners and crevices of the "rock’’ pan
theon, that robs so slightly, yet is deceptive enough where
• does not leave any reel conclusive proof of extreme
tampering.

God’s Little Monkeys
Lip (Alias)
God’s Little Monkeys is an English band which com
bines the energy of punK, the soulful beauty of folk and a
high level of political awareness to create a shining collec
tion of songs on Lip, their second album. Singer Joe Swiss
has a lovely, clear voice which blends perfectly with guitar
ist Jon Townend's vocals, while the rhythmic half of the
band provides a rock grounding for the voices that float
above the surface
The context of their commentary is British, with "Reyn
ard", an attack on the mentality behind foxhunting, being a
