Now that all the dust from NewSouth has
settled, maybe life in Georgia's music in
dustry can get back to normal. . . now
there's a scary thought.
One thing missing from this year’s New
South (besides a water cannon to knock
Jackyl offstage) was media coverage. Last
year, at least two local television stations
covered the event, one radio station broad
casted live from the conference hotel and
even MTV used footage from shows and
seminars as a backdrop for their program
"120 Minutes." Blame it on the Braves.
NewSouth and the pennant race just hap
pened to fall on the same weekend So,
while sports bars were packed to the tops of
their beg screen TV's with tomahawk
ing yuppies, the music scene was
relatively tame
Homage, Atlanta's answer to the
Greenwich Village coffee house,
managed to come out on top despite
cold weather, New South AND the
Braves. Witn a guesstimated capac
ity of around 100, the club packed
nearly 300 people in to celebrate the
release of the newest cassette from
Cicada Sings. By the way. be careful
when saying the band's name. I faux
pa’ed on the air by calling them ”ci-CAY-
duh Sings" like the bug. A listener called to
inform me that I simply HAD to know it was
“ci-CAH-dah." Jeeez
If you didn't know already, buskering is
illegal in the state of Georgia. Buskering, by
the way, is the fine art of performing on
street corners. Ireland's Hothouse Flowers
got their start that way, and I'd wager a
guess that so did many other fine artists.
Kodac Harrison says some of his fondest
memories are of claying on street corners.
“You get a real friendly audience playing on
the street. They’re responsive, not chair
zombies in a club." If you’ve done a little
travelling, you know that New Or-
leans and San Francisco are the in
ternationally, it’s almost encouraged.
"It adds a lot of character to a city."
says Kodac. For heaven’s sake we
can't have any of that. No, no, no.
Kristen Hall is finishing up work
on her second album, but don’t ask
her when it’s coming out. She's not
even sure who's gonna press it right
the Mary's Danish/Insane Jane show at the
Georgia Tech Coliseum, 'cause you weren’t
the only one. Up to six days before the
show, ticket sales were almost non-exis
tent. Of course, if someone had bothered to
advertise the show, they might have sold
Of course,
if someone had
bothered to
advertise the show,
they might have
sold more than 15
now. As usual, the delay has fueled up the
Atlanta rumor mili again "I’ve heard that I
have throat cancer, that I have nodes on my
vocal cords and I’ll never be able to sing
again . . Where do people get this stuff 7 "
she laughs Kristen is NOT sick, she still has
a great voice and can still write three-hanky
songs so stop your whispering.
Don’t feel bad if you didn't know about
more than 15 tickets. So-called promoters
cancelled the show and re-scheduled
Mary's Danish for a gig at the Cotton Club
on Sunday. October 27.
Get out your polyester leisure suits and
light blue eye shadow, The Masquerade is
hosting a "Disco Explosion Dance Party"
with those sultans of strobe. The Village
People Prizes will be given for the best
disco outfits at the show on Friday, the 18th.
Not to be outdone in the retro-chic depart
ment are the Stray Cats. Even though they’ve
broken up more times than I care to count,
they're scheduled to reappear, duck tails
and all, at The Masquerade on the 21st.
Metalheads can get more than their
fill of entertainment at "Sweatfest 91".
Out of the eleven bands slated to play
at Center Stage on the 26th, some you
might want to note include: Terrifyer,
Wycked Wytch, and Problem Chylde.
Pardon my cynicism, but is this going
to be the least attended show in his
tory or am I too out of touch with this
particular genre? Granted, I still don’t
get the attraction to Poison.
Don’t buy a new CD in the next
couple of weeks and maybe you’ll
have enough dough to go see Pere
“our labei hates us" Ubu and The
Pixies at Center Stage on November
17. You might remember that Pere
Ubu had to solicit funds from fans and
other bands so they could travel to
New York to play the David Letterman
Show after their record company re
fused to foot the bill They made it to
the Big Apple, and nowthey're headed
to Atlanta to open for the Pixies.
If you manage to scrape together your
very last pennies to catch a show at the
Center Stage, be prepared to finger tele
phone com return slots for a spare quarter
as well. From now on, every time you pur
chase a ticket for a show, they’re gonna hit
you with a 25 cent “Center Stage Restora
tion Fee", like it or not.
