“Every sentence that I
utter must be understood not
as an affirmation, but as a
Question'' said scientist
Niels Bohr. Once again this
week, Flagpole readers
have posed a quantity of
quirky questions for old An
swering Ed. I'll try to answer some of them.
for legalization of pot, but every year more than 300
thousand Americans are arrested for marijuana
possession here in the land of the allegedly free.
The best book about the conspiracy against cur
rights represented by the pot laws is The Emperor
Wears No Clothes by Jack Herer. It is available
from High Times magazine or by mail for $ 13 from
Hemp Publishing, 5632 Van Nuys Blvd., Van Nuys,
California 91401.
1. Just so we'll know, why is marijuana really illegal?
Marijuana was made illegal by the U S. Con
gress in 1937during a campaign of hysteria pushed
by the yellow journalism of the Hearst newspapers
and the mad ran tings of top Federal narco cop Harry
Anslinger The hemp plant from which marijuana is
derived provides a myriad of useful products includ
ing rope, twine, paper and motor oil made from the
seeds of the plant. Petrochemical alcohol and
pharmaceutical companies have long viewed the
hemp industry as an unwelcome form of competition
and they have opposed legalization of the plant.
Federal and state governments have been making
a tragic mistake with the marijuana laws for over 50
years but it is not in the nature of governments to
admit that they have been mistaken. By its very
nature as an herb that is passed around and shared,
the noble weed conflicts with the acquisitive and
unsharing mainstream American ethic. Americans
as diverse as scientist Margaret Mead and conser
vative columnist William F 3uckley have come out
2. Where does the phrase
“Mad as a Hatter" come from?
Early hatmakers used the liquid metallic ele
ment mercury in their craft. When the mercury
would soak through the skin or be ingested acci
dentally by the hatters it would work its deleterious
effects on the brains of the craftsmen and cause
them to go “mad as a hatter." The Mad Hatter in
Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland is the most
famous literary example of a crazed workman who
sacrificed his sanity for his craft.
3. When you call someone on the phone and you
hear it ringing, is their phone ringing at the same
time?
Say what? Stay away from that mercury
Keep those questions coming, folks. If you have

Really Important Stuff
/ know thatycu, gentle reader, see this column
every week and ponder“where on Earth does he get
all this really important stuff 7 " Well, that's a good
question and one not to be taken lightly. To answer,
just let me say that I have no less than 500 paid
informants combing the streets of Athens everyday
(identifiable by only a sixth finger on their left hand).
You really couldn't expect me to do it by myself.
Tree stuff
Don’t look now but this weekend, Friday and Sat
urday, Oct. 18 and 19, two days, count them, the
lucky citizens of
Athens can find com
fort in the knowledge
that the Golden
Ginkgo Jamboree will
arrive once again at
College Square
downtown. Yippee.
Friday there will be
lots of arts and crafts
and handmade crea
tions of various and
sundry types. Top
ping off the evening
festivities will be a wiz-
bang concert featur
ing none other than the Normaltown Flyers held,
coincidentally, on the top floor of the Clarke County
Parking Deck. The next day, be prepared to pur
chase your share of heartburn at the Third Annual
Chili Cook-off presented by the Athens West Rotary
Club The proceeds for this benefit will go to the
Athens Area Homeless Shelter, Boys Club, and
Habitat for Humanity. For more info call 546-1446.
Scary stuff
Have you ever wondered if those stupid garlic
necklaces that Chuck Heston used in the Omega
Man would have really worked 7 Here's your chance
to find out on Tuesday, Oct. 22, at the Tate Student
Theater. The University Union will present world
famous Dracula expert Dr. Raymond McNally. Seems
this guy has written a book, In Search of Dracula,
and he knows all there is to know about the best
ways to kill those blood sucking undead. Tickets for
this event are to be found at the Tate Center cash
iers' window and are $2 for UGA students and $3
for everyone else.
Fair stuff
Murder at the Clarke County Fair — this weeks'
adventures of Mike and Jim. Mike and Jim race
against time as the police ccmmissioner is mur
dered and side-kick Toa is the chief suspect. Bone-
chilling suspense as
they unravel the
mystery of the Side
Show Strangler as
well as teaching an
earnest lesson about
racial tolerance
Don't miss the thrill
ing sequence as
they sword fight on
the Tilt-A-Whirl, re
veal ugly secrets of
the side show, it’ll be
a while before Jim
McKay gets back on
the Ferris Wheel for
laughs...Also, watch as they perform heart warm
ing feats of daring-ao as Michael recalls his days
as a ball player and wins schools of goldfish for a
bus load of orphaned kids. Or they might not show
up at all. Go to the Clarke County Fair or the
Elberton Fair and see. You might have fun anyway.
Music stuff
If you want to check out the original line-up of
the Vigilantes of Love, your opportunity is Saturday,
Oct. 19 at the Flying Buffalo. That line-up includes
Bill Mallonee, Jonathan Evans, Mark Hall, and
Dodd Darity. Also, on that same billing, Dawn
Whitehouse of Rivers Been and Arthur Tarratus will
team up as a new folk-blues duo called Vein.
