Government 101
As election time rolls around again, and the little vote-for
me signs on wooden sticks start popping up in yards all
about grand ole Athens/Clarke County like groundhogs, you,
the voters, will be called upon to cast your ballot for the
plethora of political candidates running the race. Since this
is the first election after the unification of the A/C govern
ments, it is altogether imperative that those registered to vote
(and we here at Flagpole hope you are among those who
chose to exercise their political muscle) take the time to look
closely and listen intently to the candidates up for re-election
to the Commission. Informed voting requires thought and
examination of the issues at hand, and with all of the hoopla
going on in Athens right now around the Commission’s vote
on the Civic Center design, it is time to put on the trusty
thinking cap and go over the campaigns with a magnifying
glass. More people than not are highly irate about the
Commission's vote for the Polshek design with its $25 million
dollar price tag. as well as other local issues. If you don't like
what you’ve been getting out of the Commission, then you
are responsible for voting for someone else who you think
can do a better job.
I decided to go back through some of last year's locals
voting guides and examine some of the responses of the
Commissioners up for re-election, i.e. those Commissioners
in the even numbered districts: Miriam Moore, District 2;
John Barrow, District 4; Marilyn Farmer, District 6; Ken
Jordan, District 8, and Tal DuVall, District 10. I selected
questions that have been big issues on a local level as well
as ones that are being addressed nationally. It was and is
informative to read over how the Commissioners look at
problems and seek solutions because it not only identifies
their political stand but also their particular personality,
whether wishy-washy and stale or firm and resolute.
In our liberal tradition, the Flagpole voting guide asked as
its numero uno question whether the candidate thought local
government should support, put money into, that is, the arts
and music industry in Athens/Clarke County.

Minuets, fugues
and galas
Music is on most peoples’ minds when they think of
Athens, and true this city does have a strong music scene.
But before we had the B-52’s, Pylon, and R.E.M., we had the
School of Music and the strains of classical music floating
through the halls. So, if you’re itching for something different,
go down to the library and give an ear to Verdi, Haydn, or
Berlioz. Listen to a minuet or fugue (my fave — Bach’s Tittle
Fugue") or even perhaps — gasp! — an opera. And after
you've enjoyed that, check out one of these free great per
formances:
