Election ’92: The Players
"Never defend, always attack." That
quote, Tom Harkin's credo, sums up what
went wrong in the Democrats' handling of
the '88 election and provides some hope for
the party’s future. The Democratic Party’s
future is exactly what's at stake in this
season’s primary campaign. It’s going to
boil down to this: do the people want a
Democrat who acts like a Democrat to beat
the Republicans, or do the people want a
Democrat who acts like a Republican to
beat the Republicans?
Last I checked, there were five men who
had "officially" announced their candidacy
for the Democratic nomination. At press,
two more were expected to announce within
the week and a third is rumored to be
"considering" it (and none of these are even
Cuomo 1 ) Here is a quick, ludicrously sim
plistic rundown of these men, all of whom
have some insane notions that they can
defeat "King George".
Of the more “Republican" of the Demo
cratic candidates we start with Paul Tson-
gas, former senator of Massachusetts, (and
I’ll give him brownie points for this) the first
Democrat with the balls to go ahead and
enter the stupid race (albeit on the assump
tion that Kerrey wasn't going to enter oh
well). He graduated Dartmouth and received
his law degree from Yale Though labeled
by the mainstream press as a “60's" Demo
crat (whatever that means) he is extremely
pro-business (not that that in and of itself
makes one less a Dem.) and owner of the
line, “The Cold War is over and Japan won."
He did the Peace Corps thing instead of the
Vietnam thing and his political heroes are
John and Bobby Kennedy.
Another moderate is Arkansas Gover
nor Bill Clinton, another "60’s" Democrat
.who’s education includes Georgetown,
Oxford, and Yale Law, and who’s heroes
also include the same two Kennedy broth
ers. Clinton’s strategey, uttered in not so
many (or few) words, is to recapture middle
America, translation: white males. Clinton is
the embodiment of the "new" Democrats,
through his heading the Democratic Lead
ership Conference (the think tank and pol
icy base for right of center Democrats) and
programs he has ^ m

Douglas Wilder,
Governor of Virginia,
will be running on a
campaign of "fiscal responsibility”, specifi
cally countering the old "tax and spend"
Democratic stereotype and, I suppose, the
“cut taxes and borrow and spend" Repub
licans.
As for the Democrats running as.
well...Democrats (with a capital L). first we
have Jerry Brown, of Linda Ronstadt fame,
and also former Governor of California. He
is expected to officially announce this week
and will be running on that most popular of
politicians' claims: "outsidership". (yup,
California is far away f r om Washington...)
James Carter ran on that theme and won.
His campaign strategist? Patrick Caddell.

Mr. Brown’s campaign manager? Patrick
Caddell. Go figure.
Our next Democrat is Nebraska popu
list" senator Bob Kerrey. Bob Kerrey is
young and only a junior senator (two years
in the Senate). However, this fact js not a
disadvantage. Another of the ‘60 s Demo
crats, he did the Vietnam thing and lost a leg
but won the Congressional Medal of Honor
His political heroes are Allard Lowenstem
and Gary Hart. This University of Nebraska
graduate has had a short but notable ca
reer in the Senate so far He voted against
1— ^the S&L Bailout and
against theGulfWar
He was integral in
uncovering the
BCCI scandal
,.'hich brings us
back to Mr Harkin.,
who’s quote began
this whole sorry
mess of deep politi
cal analysis. Senator Tom Harkin of Iowa
represents THE embodiment of the Liberal
Democrat. If the Democrats decide to go
with their liberal heritage, then this is the
man to do it with Mr. Harkin is not simply a
rich guy wnc sympathizes or identifies with
the poor (like certain famous senators from
Mass...), but grew up that way And. unlike
certain unnamed newly appointed Supreme
Court Justices, he has not forsaken the
liberal government philosophies that may
have given him a bootstrap or two to pull
himself up by Harkin began his political
career working under one of his heroes,
Senator William Fulbright, the outspoken
opponint of the Vietnam War from the time
of the Tonkin Gulf Resolution. During a fact
finding junket to Vietnam, Harkin won brief
notoriety for his pictures of the brutal bam
boo "tiger cages" used by the South Viet
namese for political prisoners. These pho
tos appeared in Life magazine in 1970 after
most other magazines and newspapers
refused to publish them.
As a Representative during the Ford
administration Harkin was able to force a
measure to use human rights as a criterion
for foreign aid recipiants. As a Senator,
Harkin sponsored and managed to get
passed the Americans With Disabilities Act
of 1990. a landmark civil rights bill for handi
capped Americans. He unabashadly boasts
of strong support from US labor unions
In other words, Harkin would be quite
flattered by being “accused" of being the L
word, something the Democratic Party didn't
feel last time and something that it will neea
to decide if it wants to be this time. With even
Eugene McCarthy possibly running, the
question will be central to the campaign
Those of you who are registered Demo
crats must remember that this question is
going to be answered by you. You are a
"member" of this "club". Membership has
itspriveleges, and, its responsibilities They
will not decide, you will. If you are one of
those interested in seeing a DEMOCRAT
run against King George in ‘92, then you will
have to participate in the primary process
Its your party .and you can cry if you want to,
but you must take responsibility for your’s.
and our. destiny. Vote.
