Spo-sin’
they’re poetic
The Spo-its play The Downstairs on Sunday night, November 3. This
is the only show in town on Sunday nights, although it tries hard not to
act that way It’s all-ages and no-alcohol, so show up without your
own...The Downstairs can sell it, but (due to arcane, archaic, and
downright Draconian laws) not on Sundays. Groan. Save yourselves
a trip to Chattanooga or Tryon, N. C. —clang down the sta>rs and enjoy
some music, some good food, and a few (all nice and legal) surprises
here and there Then go home and have a cold one in the privacy of
your own living room, something The Downstairs often comes damned
close to being. I almost forgot: The Spo-its bring in the Da Da Horn
Section. How’s that for openers? Should be interesting, if atonally
brassy. Better than gospel tuba 8-tracks, folks. (30.)

Civic Insult
To Whom it may concern:
I am not easily offended, but the Athens Civic
Center Authority has offended me. The Athens Clarke
County Commision is now set up to offend me. Al ! of
this is over the possible approval of the Polshek #1
design for the Proposed Civic Center
This issue has gone on for so long, been so pub
licized, and has had so much public input, that I am
stunned at the stupid decision of the Authority to
accept the first, least acceptable, and least popular
of the designs A mistake at this stage will cost us
buildings, money, future expenses, and not the least
of the expenses, the credibility of the local govern
ment.
I feel that I personally study local issues and
politics carefully, and make careful decisions based
on that study.
In this case, I am already offended by the evident
foolishness and shortsightedness heretofore ex
pressed by those in control of this project, and by the
vast waste of money and even vaster non-respon-
siveness of some officials, elected or appointed, past
or present.
Many of these issues have been developed and
discussed in public fora, in newspaper editorials,
and in the press articles. Most people know of the
situation, and I do not need to elaborate. I am limited
by various positions I hold in my ability to make
statements of support or opposition to camdates But
because of the seriousness of this, I would like to say,
as an individual, that the Commissioners voting to go
ahead with Polshek #1 will NOT find my support in
future elections, whether next year or later, and their
future opponents will likewise recieve my serious
consideration.

King Avenue Danger
Dear Flagpole,
I am writing aboutthe proposed rezoning from resi
dential to office/institutional of a portion of King Ave
nue into a medical office complex. Initially, four exist
ing houses were to be razed. However, the plan now
calls for two of the structures to remain in order to retain
the '‘feel" of a residential neighborhood.
Residents of the King Avenue area are working not
to retain the "feel" of a residential neighborhood, but to
preserve the area as a residential neighborhood The
so-called "preservation minded" approach now being
touted by the doctors misses the point: In order to be
used for medical offices, the area would have to be
rezoned. At a recent meeting with the King Avenue
Neighborhood Association, the physicians:’ experts
compared what they hope to achieve on King Avenue
with Lumpkin Street as it now exists. Strangely enough,
they believed the comparison to be a favorable one
and likened the medical complex to a corner grocery
store.
This issue will soon be decided by the Planning
Commission and the Unified Government. Please lend
your support to the neighborhood by writing letters,
calling the Observer telephone poll, sporting a sign in
your lawn or car, and by raising community awareness
of this issue. If you would like to learn more about the
Neighborhood Association and share your concerns
with us, please call 546-9060 or 548-3825. Thank you
Sincerely.
