Information for Body, Mind and Soul
Body, Mind and Soul is a new column here at Flagpole designed to
inform you of the various lectures, classes, cultural events, meetings,
support groups, etc. going on in the Athens/Clarke County area.
Contact names and numbers (if available) follow each entry. If your
group has something going on they think people should be aware of. let

What to do
CLASSES/WORKSHOPS
Georgia Museum of Art — The Art oi Poetry
is a workshop in which local poet, Lucy Ingram,
will guide participants in translating images into
words and words into images. Free. 542-3255.
Georgia Spinai Center — Prenatal aquatic

Lyndon House Art Center — A stained glass
workshop for adults will be offered Saturday,
Nov. 23 from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. The
application fee is $15 and registration will
continue until the date of the class, or until the

State Botanical Gardens — The Edible
Landscape is a workshop focusing on how
vegetables, fruits and flowers can be managed
into a beautiful landscape. Fees are $10/
members, $12/non-members.

State Botanical Gardens — A bonsai exhibi
tion, featunng over 100 specimen of bonsai
plants will be held Nov 2 and 3, from 930 am
to 4 30 pm A styling demonstration will be held

LECTURES/SEMINARS
Edutainment — KRS-ONE (Kris Parker) of
Boogie Down Productions will be speaking at
Georgia Hall of the UGA Tate Student Center
on Nov. 6. Tickets are $2/students and $4/

The Ethics ol Scholarship: The Politics of
the Mothers ol the Disappeared — Jean

A/C Arts & Environmental Ed. Dept — Bob
Fosse’s Chicago will be performed in the UGA
Fine Arts Auditorium at 8.00 pm, Nov. 1 — 3.

Georgia Center for Continuing Education
The musical On the Town with Jerri Lynn Wil
liams accompanied by the New Cabaret Tno.
Shows are Nov. 1 and 2 and will feature Broad
way music. Tickets are $7 in advance and

UGA School of Music — A faculty recital
featunng Stephanie Pierce, soprano, will be
heid Nov. 1 at 700 pm. A student recital will be
held Nov. 5 at 4:30 pm. Leonard Ball will be
performing electronic music at 8:30 pm Nov. 5.

Madison-Morgan Cultural Center—Woodtur-

SUPPORT GROUPS
Adoption Support Group—For couples who
want to adopt and those families that have.
Meetings are the fourth Tues. of each month at
7:00 pm at Covenant Presbyterian Church on

AGLA Homosexual Support Group — Sup
port and info for those that are gay, lesbian, or
interested in homosexuality. 549-0190.
AIDS Athens — For people who have tes'ed
HIV positive and people with AIDS. Meetings
are first Tues. each month at 7 pm at the Dept
of Family & Children Services. 542-AIDS.
Alanon — Provides an opportunity for adult
family members, loved ones and fnends of
alcoholics to come together, share problems,
and learn how to best support and help some
one with an alcohol problem. Meetings are
Mondays, Tuesdays. Wednesdays, and Fn-

Alcoholics Anonymous — For those who
have a problem with alcohol. Meetings are held

American Cancer Society: “Bosom Bud
dies" — A support group for people who have
had breast cancer. Meetings are the third
Monday of each month at 7:00 pm at the
Cancer Society office, 545 Reasearch Drive.

a person with mental illness. Meetings are the

Athens Area Depression Mutual Support
Group — For people who have experienced or
are experiencing depression or bipolar condi

The Ark — Organized congregations provide
assistance tor those who need help with food,
rent, utilities, or other emergency needs. At

American Civil Liberties Union — Provides
free legal services concerning constitutional

American Red Cross — Northeast Georgia
Chapter. Offers disaster services, military family
services, and other means of assistance. 3131

Athens Area Emergency Food Bank —
Supplies people with real emergency needs
with up to seven days of food for their family.
Must have referral from the Ark, Catholic Social
Services, or ACTION, Inc. 546-8293.
Emergency Financial Assistance — Assists
those with needs in areas of food, medical
prescnptions, shelter costs, and utility costs.
Eligibility based on 100 percent of the Poverty
Income Scale. 546-8295.

GA Dept, of Family & Children Services —
Provides food stamps, emergency finanaal
assistance for energy, utilities, prescription

G A Extension Service—Provides farm, family
and home management assistance as well as
a variety of other services from health and diet
programs, to vanous support and counseling

Food Assistance Program — Distributes
emergency food to anyone of low income,
handicapped or eligible under another criteria

GA Legal Services — Provides legal help in
civil matters for low-income households. 369-

Legal Aid Clinic — Provides legal representa
tion for criminals, as well as general legal
information, and referral to anyone in Clarke

Poison Control Center — Emergency in
structions for anyone who has swallowed or

Project Safe — Provides support and assis
tance to anyone trying to deal with a physical or
mental domes tic violence problem. Money and

Rape Crisis Center — Provides support and
assistance for anyone who has expenenced
rape or sexual abuse. 353-1912.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
Alps Road Elementary — Needs mature
persons to participate in the Homework Helper
Program Volunteers would assist students
about 30 minutes a day, twice a week dunng

The Ark — Provide assistance for those who
need help with emergency needs. Any
volunteers or supporters are welcome. Located

Athens-Clarke County Senior Center —
Needs volunteers to help in the areas of music,
visiting, phone reassurance, exercise, activites,

Athens Regional Library — Volunteers for

G A Council on Child Abuse — Needs mental
health professionals to lead support groups for

Oconee County DFACS — Needs volunteer
drivers to assist Medicaid reapients to travel
back and forth to medical appointments in this
