No cartoons
There used to be a cartoon show on t. v. when I was coming along named
"Cecil The Seasick Sea Serpent." It was executed by one Bob Clampett. Well,
now that the connection is nebulous. I'll clear it up: Bob and Clamp will mix and
match at The Downstairs on Tuesday. November 5. A good couple ot bands,
interspersed with food and drink and fun. We think you ougnt to be there. You
can draw your own conclusions...and cartoons. (30.)
Tales for your trick-or-treat bag
How many out there believe every day is Halloween? —
raise your claws. Some of the wildest, weirdest, most
experimental and extreme horror fiction ever is being
written and published today. So why not do a little seasonal
reading — if you dare...Here are some of 1991’s most
unusual horror novels and story collections, all out now in
paperback Pick up a few and read them in the graveyard.
One of the most eco-friendly horror novels to date is The
Bridge, by John Skjpp and Craig Spector, just out from
Bantam. It’s a moral tale of toxic waste gone mad. or “what
happens when our shit wakes up and bites us on the ass."
The authors are also accomplished rock musicians who
have recorded a soundtrack to the book. If you like rock n’
roll horror, check out some of their earlier work, most
notably The Scream and The Cleanup.
Nightlife by Brian Hodge (Dell Abyss) is a fast-paced
thriller about a hallucinogenic, body-altering drug smuggled
from the Venezuelan ram forests to modern Miami. There's
sleazy porn, tribal legend, lots of chemicals, and a great
piranha torture scene.
If you can take dizzying combinations of sick humor,
f exas tall tales, extreme violence and lyrical, often beautiful
writing, you ought to love Joe R. Lansdale. The title story of
his collection, By Bizarre Hands (Avon Books), is a twisted
Halloween tale featuring a retarded girl named Cinderella,
a ghost costume, and a travelling preacher with a taste for
more than trick-or-treat candy. Not for the easily offended.

Seven Sweetest Dreams is a movie tie-in featuring tales of
the Gloved, Fedora'd. Scorched One by seven different
horror writers, many of whom are quite good. It is of
particular local interest for its lead story, "Asleep at the
Wheel" by Brian "Nightlife" Hodge. It’s the story of an
alternative rock band, the Nancy Thompson Gravewatch,

whose five very young, very sensitive, very hip members
leave Freddytown and strike out on a pilgrimage to — you
guess — Athens, GA. They must've seen the movie
Whether you're a Freddy Krueger fan or net, you'll love
watching him fuck up these cute but clueless trendies in
five different inventive, excruciating ways.
Required reading for anyone who has ever attended an
art opening is The Cipher by Kathe Koja. It is populated by
alienated boys in black berets and long black coats,
psychobitches, bad artists, people you want to hit. But
don't be fooled — nothing like this has ever been written
before, and it is decidedly bizarre. The Cipher was the
premier book in the cutting-edge Dell Abyss horror line,
and the hottest first novel of 1991.
If you’re a fan of elegant, disturbing, often hallucinatory
terror-tales, seek out Thomas Ligotti’s short story collection
Songs of a Dead Dreamer (Carroll & Graf). “Alice’s Last
Adventure" is a Halloween special about a writer of sinister
children’s stories who becomes haunted by a character
she created 1 many years ago. Children see things in their
masks; mirrors yawn and laugh; clocks run backward.
Ligotti's voice is by turns lush, paranoid, unctuous, claus-
.rophobic. I've heard him called Lovecraft on mushrooms,
but even that doesn't do the man justice.
These books are better than candy corn. So treat
yourself to a cerebral shudder, a guts 'n' gore gross-out. or
anything in between. When you’re home alone some night
with shadows dancing in the corners and something going
skntch-skritch-skritch at the door, you'll be glad you did.
