On Friday, Oct. 25.! had to put to death my dog, “Z". I had
adopted Z from the pound ($40) when I moved out of town
this August. Z was famous all over for being the most
scamming dog that ever was. He was always fighting,
fucking, and running around scamming food. He was known
to ramble across Athens and back, staying with all of his
strategically placed “owners". It was to this Z that I became
so attached.
He and his brother (both were black and tan coon
hounds) fathered a litter of puppies to a stray female, brought
home from one of their walk abouts. She had seven puppies
and no owner. When I found out she was living under an
empty house across the street from my old residence, I
immediately went up to see if any of the puppies were alive
and if someone was caring for them. Myself and some
friends found seven mud-covered, flea infested balls that
howled and yelped at being so rudely invaded. We, of
course, were suckers and took them home. We washed
them for what seemed hours; we went and bought a moun
tain of puppy chow.
Our home was crawling with animals. The tally: Two adult
dogs, seven puppies, three cats. So the whole horde moved

out to the country, where there is enough room for that many
animals. We gave away puppies, trying carefully to screen
the owners to find caring people who would provide medical
care, attention, love for their pet and be responsible for their
pet. You see herein lies the rub: Responsibility. During the
time we gave away puppies, I became aware of other
situations similar. One friend had nine puppies dumped in
her yard- some with mange. There are a million more.
Domestic animals are not wild. They do not need to roam.
They do not need to mate constantly. They do not need to run
free. When animals are not fixed, they make more animals
that wind up dying horrible deaths, alone and abandoned.
The mama of our seven beautiful pups had never had an
owner. She was wary of people, did not know a collar or a
leash, would eat anything and protected her puppies fiercely.
Animals that do have owners, but are not kept as com
panions and instead are just allowed to run free become
uncontrollable and wild. Z was out of control. I fixed him and
he calmed down but still roamed some. I thought he would
get better, and it seemed that he did — until earlier last week.
We received a note in our mailbox that a dog fitting the
description of Z had killed a kitten. I did not believe it and
thought that another dog Z hung around with had done it.
After all, Z had lived around cats and kittens before. How
ever, Friday morning my household awoke to a monstrous
dog frght. I saw out the window a dead young cat. Z had
blood on his muzzle and was covered in skunk scent. The
other dogs ran off and we caught Z. I don’t know what
happened exactly, but I do know that we had not gotten Z in
the night before. Yes, there were excuses: We fell asleep.
We’d find him in the morning. None the less, now we were
among the people who are irresponsible animal owners.
Why do I write all of this? It is a very sad story. The plight
of animals is a sad story. When I see someone who doesn’t
fix their animal, I get angry. When I see someone letting their
dog or cat run around to be picked up. hit by cars, or mat.ng
freely, I get angry When I see someone who won’t pay the
medical bills for shots and treatment, I think of the animals
I’ve seen that suffer and die from preventable diseases and
I get angry. When I hear people say that they won’t pay to fix
their pet or that it is “cruel", I think of the 3 out of 4 dogs and
puppies that are put to death and I get angry. I think of the
bills I’ve paid trying to do my small part, caring for the animals
others cannot or have not.
The bottom line is this: If you want an animal: be respon
sible Pick a companion that needs you (i.e., from the pound,
etc ), pay its bills, get it fixed, and give it affection and be a
true owner. If you cannot do these things, do not get an
animal. It if far better to take any animal and humanely put
it to sleep, than to perpetuate this terrible and tragic cycle.
Good-bye Z We loved you very much. We tried our best,
and we will miss you. A|| Jones
