WE DID IT!
1 hat's right folks! Feel real good about yourself and pat
yourself on the back, because the Johnston-Wallop bill was
defeated*. The bill did not even reach the floor for debate!
There was a threatened filibuster and the Senate did not vote
the 2/3 majority needed for cloture to prevent it. There was
some frantic calling about on the part of the Sierra Club and
SEA on the night before the cloture vote in an attempt to flood
Wyche Fowler and Sam Nunn’s offices with calls to vote
against cloture. But it ain’t all over yet people. Now we’ve got
to be pro-active, instead of just reactive. All of you who wrote
your congressfolks not to support the Johnson-Wallop bill,
need to be sure now to write them again, urging support for
the Cafe bill. This bill would raise the average mpa of the auto
fleet, saving tremendous amounts of oil and preventing
tremendous amount of pollutants from being emitted.
COALITIONS
Several members of SEA went to hear KRS-ONE (Kris
Parker) last Wednesday night. Parker gave a talk (not a
performance) about many things, but focused predomi
nantly on intellect and spirituality.
He said that when we preserve the Earth, we preserve
ourselves. When we destroy the Earth, we destroy ourselves.
...being a
human being
means to
l * 'm
serve
ir ; iffl
humanity...
The slogan “Save the Earth m is not accurate because the
Earth doesn’t have the problem. It will go on about its
business, heading toward blowing up. It is we that have the
problem. (All this I’m paraphrasing from his talk).
His main message to everyone was that before being
defined as white, black, environmentalist, mother, etc., that
first we are human beings. And being a human being means
to serve humanity. If you would rather have humanity serve
you, then you are "anti-human." What this means is that the
struggle for a healthy environment is a struggle of all people
and likewise this means that the struggle of African-Ameri
cans, of Native Americans, of the Irish, and the Tibetan
people, — of any people — is the struggle of environmental
ists. If you don’t think that the struggle for justice and the
struggle for a sane, sustainable way of living on the planet
aren’t related then you haven’t thought about it.
If a government or company or a person doesn’t care how
its actions affects the environment, do you think it will care
how it affects other people? Do you think that the South
African government that still hasn't eradicated the system of
Apartheid has taken steps to eradicate its dumping of toxic
and hazardous waste? No. As a matter of fact they not only
dump these dangerous chemicals, but where do you think
they dump it? (hint: not in the Afrikaaner neignborhoods) Do
you think that a logging company (such as Louisiana Pacific)
that would log at such a reckless rate on public lands at a loss
to tax payers is going to care whether or not loggers will be
put out of work? No. In fact logging rates are going up at the
same time unemployment rates are too. Why? It is not
because of protection or laws but it is the result of the
mechanization of logging and the practice of shipping of
logs whole to the Eastern Pacific Rim. Do you think these
same companies that make paper care about the dumping
of dioxins into rivers during the process of making paper?
The bottom line and message is what Kris Parker’s
message was. do something.
Don’t just sit on your butt thinking about your next meal or
date or future job. Start thinking about the issues. Start
challenging your intellect and asking why? Start working with
a group, or at least start working on your own, doing your
part. This may be changing the way you live (re. consume
less, recycle, precycle, compost, etc.) or this may be learn
ing about the issues (read!) or it may be preparing for a
career that will be involved in helping humanity.
Lastly, like Kris said: don’t just blindly believe or memorize
facts — everything is questionable. Just because you have
just read all that about South Africa is no reason to just say
“OK" — find out for yourself.
