Calvin's in NYC and the Yams
are playing a benefit for the
homeless at the Flying Buffalo

Really Important Stuff
Obviously, some of this "stuff" is “really important" and some of it will serve better lining
someone's litter box I trust that you're bright enough to decipher which is which.
Homeless Stuff
According to the U S. Census Bureau, in 1991 the slice of our population living beiow the
poverty level rose to an award winning 33.6 million "points of light"... people, in other words.
One fifth of our grand nation’s children and one third of our African-American citizens are now
considered poor. Take a bow, George. Well, since we really can’t expect the government to
he'p anyone, it looks like we’ll have to start helping each other.
Starting out on Wednesday, Nov. 20 and Thursday, Nov. 21, the Flying Buffalo will host
two nights to benefit the Athens Area Homeless Shelter. Suppling music the first night will
be Debbie Norton, Sommerville& Phillips. The Yams and Blue Groove. Speaking will be Jo K n
Hocking, President of AAHS and Sadie Booker a former shelter guest. The next night, expect
music from Kip & Ian, Tatooed Dogs and Nathan Sheppard, with speaker Joane Jones,
Director of AAHS. Then on Friday, Nov. 22 folks are encouraged to gather at the AAHS itself
(at 620 Barber St.) after 6 p.m. for a candlelight vigil to begin at 6:30, and then a walk
downtown to College Square for “Live Living Room," a rally for the homeless. The rally will
have plenty of music from many bands ranging from Bullet Proof to the Vigilantes of Love,
and just as many speakers including CEO Gwen O’Looney and Executive Director of Atlanta
Task Force For the Homeless, Jim Beaty.
The AAHS is something worthy of our support. In addition to a roof in rough times, the
shelte r provides guests with food, clothing, employment assistance and laundry services.
“But," according to Rally Chairman, Walt Reynolds, “even these services cannot be provided
to everyone, as the problem grows worse each day. Our capacity is 28 people. The shelter
is turning away an average of 100 homeless people per month."
Someone else who just lost his home recently is Don Simonds of the Healers. He and his
wife Tracy were victims of a fire last week that took just about everything they owned. You
can help them out and have a good time to boot if you’re at the GA Theatre on Wednesday,
Nov. 27. The Normaltown Flyers have moved their regular Wednesday gig from Allens for this
special show. Also on the bill are Plat Eye Blue and Marion Montgomery, and all for only $4.
We know you don’t have to work the next day, so be there.
Novel Stuff
Born near Madison, GA in 1934, author Raymond Andrews now calls Athens home. He
has penned three novels: Appalachee Red (1978), Rosiebelle Lee Wildcat Tennessee
(1980) and Baby Sweet's (1983). This Saturday, Nov. 23 you can pick up his fourth novel,
Jessie and Jesus and Cousin Claire, and meet the man in person. He'll be signing his newest
book at Book Warehouse in the Beechwood Shopping Center, from 1 to 3 p.m. It’s proba
bly a better read than this rag For more info call Catherine Zimmer at 546-7527.
Ceramic Stuff
I know, you've been meaning to throw that pot on the old wheel for weeks now, but
something always seems to come up It’s the same with me. Well, now there's no need for
us to go through all that trouble and mess, because there’s good news Yes, the Ceramic
Student Organization of UGA is sponsoring their Fall Pottery Sale on Thursday and Friday,
Nov. 21 & 22 at the Visual Arts Building on Jackson St. Sale hours are from 10 a m. to 6 p.m,
and I’m sure there'll be bargains a-plenty. You know, you can never have too many vases.
Pool Stuff
There’s probably a lot of you out there just itchin’ to clean house some night at your
favorite bar playing pooi. The only problem is you’re just a little hesitant when it comes to
taking on the resident masters like Jimmy “the Hammer" McKay and Dominic "Mr Vegas"
DeJoseph. Well, I know a place you can hone your billiard skills to match those of any seedy
bar room hustler in this one-arch town. It’s a place called Brass Rail Billiards and you can
find it just off the Atlanta Hwy on Mitchell Bridge Rd. It has 12 real nice hand made tables
with leather pockets, que sticks not shaped like scimitars, a huge bar, giant TV and 9 Ball
Tournaments every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday And the best thing about it is no
quarters: you pay after you play. So, it’s your break.
Deadline Stuff
Two deadlines you need to know about: First, if your band is intending to go to Austin for
SXSW'92, your have to enter by December 1,1991. So, you’ve got about a week and a half.
Call (512) 467-7979 for details The other deadline is for Athens Own Video Awards to be held
st the Georgia Theatre, Saturday. Dec. 7, sponsored by MTV and TCI. You have until
Monday. Dec. 2 to get your video in. Registration boxes can be found at Rocky’s Pizza,
New'd Sound, HI FI Buys, McKillip Music, Chick Piano and TCI Ad Sales Call K:m Cauthen
at 353-6664 to know more.
