songs about domestic violence and gang
rape, they demonstrate an exceptional
understanding of the female perspective.
One Little Girl," from Bread & Circus, di
rectly confronts domestic battery and it is
possibly their most powerful song to date.
"[It] was written...iookmg at myself as
someone who is involved in sexism. It goes
from anything like calling a woman a girl to
that kind of violence; anything where women
are told to be subserviant to men. It's eve
rywhere in culture, every step of the way. Its
the subtle violence," says Glen of the song.
The hypocritical nature of international
politics is confronted in "Chile," a track from
Pale, which was inspired by the immolation
murder and attempted murder of two stu
dents by that country's military police. Both
the torture and killings perpetrated by that
dictatorship and the support it receives
from "anti-Communist" sources like the
Catholic church and the U.S. government
are attacked from an intelligent, humanistic
perspective. The subdued music and the
plea "Please only talk to me in the dark"
evoke a semblance of the perpetual *®ar
and secrecy under which individuals must
live while subject to the power of such
vicious regimes, and then lead a listener to
the point of tearful outrage at the cruelty and
injustice which exist in the world.
Based on a song like "Chile," it is clear
that Toad is interested in global politics, but
they do not attempt to preach to their audi
ence and are hesitant to give details re
garding the causes they support.
"Having somethir .g to say is very difficult
in rock. Midnight Oil [and] Billy Bragg do it
well... We are political people. We are so
cially conscious people, as we have to be,
being half-way intelligent. That comes up in
the songs as an expression of ourselves,
which is what the songs are," are Glen’s
comments on the band’s views of their
songs’ political content.
While the political aspect of Feans not
directly articulated, there are metaphorical
messages in songs like “Butterflies," which
paints a symbolic portrait of the destruction
of the weak by the powerful and indifferent.
Like many of R.E.M.’s earlier songs, the
political content of Fear is too subjective
and broad in focus to be reduced to the
level of specific issues. The meanings are
there, but it is left to the listener to decide
just what they are.
While Bread & Circus described the
flawed world as seen by an unblinkng eye,
Pale was more inwardly directed and
thoughtful about the reasons behind the
reality. On Fear, the emphasis progresses
from observation and reflection to action.
Five years after the band's inception, the
effortless beauty of Toad the Wet Sprocket’s
music remains intact, as does the unpreten
tious and honest approach they bring to its
presentation. Such eloquence and integrity
are not to be taken for granted.

Athens, Ga, home of the University of
Georgia, is supposed to be a monument to
learning, but sometimes I wonder Once
again this week, readers who lust after
learning have sent me their questions Here
are a few of my attempts at answering them
1. How do you pass a urine test for drugs 9
Just don t take it 1 It is ironic that in a year
in which we celebrate the bicentennial of
the Bill of Rights, so many Americans are
willing to piss in a bottle to get or keep a job
Drug tests are an inaccurate and unfair
invasion of privacy Drug tests are useful
only for measuring the compliancy of the
work force The only kind of drug test this
writer will take is a multiple-choice
take-home test. When a boss or a bureau
crat tells you to piss in a bottle, you tell him
to shit in his hat. An old hemp grower named
Thomas Jefferson would have refused a
urine test. You should too, but if you still are
willing to pee on command you should first
read the late, great Abbie Hoffman s Steal
This Urine Test For more information about
urine testing, write to Georgia NORML at

2. Why is there such a high homosexual
population in Athens?
There's not Gay people are everywhere
It's lust that many gay folks in Athens are
more up—front about their preferences
Good for them.
3. What’s the story about the memorial
plaque at Five Points in Athens 9
The inconspicuous plaque near Lump
kin and Mi Hedge commemorates the un
timely death of young child, Reynolds Smith,
who was struck and killed by a truck as he
rode his bicycle in November of 1922 Local
papers at the time made much of the fact
that the driver. John Mines, was a black
man who was speeding The death of the
child and his funeral in Oconee Cemetery
were front page news and the driver of the
car was charged with murder I haven't
been able to find out what happened to him,
but in 1922 a black man who killed a white
child, even by accident, was in plenty of
trouble. The racist mood of the times was
ugly. U.S Senate Democrats were fighting
against an anti-lynching bill in late 1922
and local papers in Athens reported on an
Atlanta KKK convention as though it was a
harmless gathering of Elks or Rotarians. In
the 1920s the Klan had a membership of
some 4 million coneheads
This is
important...
When you
understand the
big picture, you
will NOT let
anybody eat
this paper!
