Athens Music Television
“Athens has its own video award show!"
In honor of our many musicians, TCI Cable and MTV are hosting the appropriately named
"Athens Own Video Awards" night at the Georgia Theater on December 7.
Rules for entries stated videos must be either of an Athens band or the video was shot
in Athens. No restrictions on taste or content. It seems like someone should be keeping such
rampant creativity in check, but no.
Those attending can view a reel of last years entries, revel in the new crop of videos, and
stick around to hear the judges reveal the winners for 1991. Prizes include a day of recording
at Full Moon Studios, a QY10 Music Composer from Yamaha, a Maypex drum set, the
services of Aurora Stevenson Productions, and a set of Polk speakers.
Show up at the Ga. Theater on Saturday, pay the $2 ticket price, and watch our little town
on the big screen with one hell of a soundtrack. Laura Cook
Christmas Tape
It's that time of year again. Yes, anxious
reader the Christmas season is upon us and
with it comes an unquestionable need for
music to aid us in working up all that holiday
spirit. We here at Flagpole have the remedy
for this seasonal malady. That's right, a new
Flagpole Christmas Tape. I know, it sounds
too good to be true, but believe me we done
it again. This year's tape includes lot's of fine
folks such as Deacon Lunchbox, Opal Foxx
Quartet. Porn Orchard. Michele Malone, The
LaBrea Stampers, Alex Marquez, Redneck
Greece DeLux, Go Figures, Allgood, Daisy,
Clamp, Ben Reynolds & Jim McKay, The
Woggles, Dreams So Real, Hayride, Skin-
pops and Vic Chesnutt. (whew) All these
bands recorded at Scott Stuckey's Sound
Gallery in a space of less than two weeks. It
will be in the stores (Wuxtry, Bigshot) by this
weekend, no later than Monday anyway and
at a reasonable price, too. The proceeds
from the sales go to the Athens-Clarke Heri
tage Foundation to insure continued support
of historic preservation here in our fine
community. Be listening for tracks off the
tape on 90.5 FM and on the Leading Edge
Network on 103.7 FM. And on Friday, Dec. 13
the will be an official tape release/Christmas
Party at the Georgia Theatre with as many
bands as we can round up. So buy it.
Holiday in Hell
Club Fred has been having some interest
ing shows lately and this week is no excep
tion. Thursday, Dec. 5 head to Club Fred for
something called "Holiday in Hell." Very few
details except that it will be some form of art/
rock show, with art by Alex Schaub, John
Crowe and Matt Yelle; music from Porn
Orchard, Hayride and Loggerhead. You
know in your heart that you should be there.
Zeitgeist
After the first of the new year you can
expect to see a new publication on the streets
of Athens. The new monthly paper will be
Zeitgeist (German for "spirit of the times" I’m
told). It will full of news, opinions, art what
ever else they decide to put in it. “They" are
the editorial board — Lucy Erickson, Joe
A Review of sorts
I managed to catch the newest rock gim
mick band last Friday, Nov. 29 at the 40 Watt,
Life, Sex and Death. Picture your basic L A
spandex clad heavy metal types (a la Poi
son), except the singer is a carefully un
groomed, unwashed caricature of a home
less person named Stanley. Always “in
character," Stanley wanders around the club
prior to the show acting Taxi’s Rev. Jim on a
bad day and stinking like road kill. Eventually
he climbs on stage and becomes a polished
performer with a powerful voice and Michael
Jackson-esque dance moves. All this is in
teresting and even entertaining to watch, but
if you close your eyes you hear nothing re
markable. It's music that could be churned
out by any four proficient L A. musicians.
The only difference is the singer has a good
gimmick, good enough to get them a record
contract with Warner Brothers Records. I'm
sure they'll be sold as a band with something
to say, making a statement about the appall
ing numbers of homeless people in our
country. The only statement I see is that
some people are always willing to cash in on
other people's misery. I find it repugnant.
Look for lots of hype and real cool video in
the near future Stephen Crawford
lonno, Scott Starling and Christopher Street
— and they want your submissions of writ
ing, art and photography. Send them to P.O.
Box 387, Athens, GA 30601. Deadlines are
the 15th of every month. Questions? Call Joe
lonno at 543-2435.
