Well, soon everyone will be going home for the holidays.
I would like to wish everyone a happy time on break but, as
usual, I'd like to say a few things that I hope everyone will
ponder wh'le gone from Athens.
Food
Christmas and Hanukkah have been honored traditions
for families :n the US for many years, but let's think a little bit
about how these holidays might be changing. In everyone's
’ormative years we ail learned about Santa Claus, the lighting
of the candles in the menorah, and about the story of the
manger, etc We have a huge feast with lamb, or turkey and
exchange presents ferverently Along with the various
religious remembrances, we also give thanks for our fami
lies, our friends, and our lives. We do this, of course, by
gathering together and eating massive amounts of food. But
here again let’s consider tradition: TURKEY Oh no! She's
not attacking turkey is she? I don’t presume to tell anyone
how to eat or to live, but I would hope that the actions each
one of us take are at least thoughtful. Has anyone out there
pondered that turkey before chowmg down? How about the
rest of the food? Are we aware, when our family sits down to

eat that traditional meal, where the food comes from 7 Aware
that turkeys are factory farmed in inhumane and unsanitary
conditions? Are we aware that the pig that is ham is also
factory farmed? How about the lamb raised to be killed
young for a tender cut? I'll also point out that the vegetables
like potatoes, corn, etc were most likely grown using pesti
cides and fertilizers heavily and that these damage the
environment This is not to say “don't eat", but these facts are
something tc remember and think about. Try something new
for Christmas or Hanukkah! Try a vegetarian meal (gasp!).
Every year I come up with a new dish for my family to try. Find
out about organically grown food, and what you can do to
change how food is produced in the U.S.
Shopping
And if that wasn't enough I'm going to delve into the
shopping tradition of Christmas and Hanukkah. Now days,
during the holidays, everyone strives to be super-consum
ers! While we are feverishly shopping for our relatives and
loved ones let's all stop and consider what we are doing.
What are we buying 7 How are we wrapping it? Are we
zooming around in cars to every store in town, looking for that
special latest consumer item encased in plastic that we'll
wrap up in gaudy paper and plastic wrapping? What’s
wrong with this picture? Try phoning before driving. Think
about the gifts you'll be buying. What went in to making it?
What is it packaged in? Something as simple as carrying
your own bag shopping can really help the environment. Try
buying something new this year. I can't wait to buy my new
twin cousins each their own hug-a-planet!
Glow-in-the-dark Jesus?
Now about those Christmas trappings: This year be sure
and compost or mulch that Christmas tree (many cities have
this curbside; Athens does). Even better, try buying a live
tree that your family can plant afterwards in a brand new
Christmas family tradition. What about those trimmings?
Don't get that disposable plastic tinsel! Try stringing pop
corn or cranberries. Make your family's ornaments! Those
presents under the tree would look even more inviting
wrapped in recycled paper. Earthcare paper has wrapping
paper that is pretty, as well as paper with skating penguins
and polar bears (Kmko’s and Frontier usually has some for
sale around this time)
Remember that the holidays are a time of peace and love.
Be loving to each other and create peace. Take a moment
to think of the places in the world that are not at peace.
Remember that the holidays are not just a time for consum
ing, but instead use the time to create a tradition of realizing
one's own place in the world Reflect a little on the Earth.
