Really Important Stuff
Recognition
The First Annual Coca-Cola Atlanta Music
Awards will be held on Thursday, March 19,
at the Fox Theater in, of course, Atlanta.
Georgia musicians of all kinds will be hon
ored and many of our friends and neighbors
will be in attendance. We'll have people
there to cover the event and schmooze back-
stage in the press room. Tickets may still be
available through Ticketmaster, so check it
out.
Conviction
There will be a Pro-Choice march on
Washington sponsored by National Organi
zation for Women on
April 5 . This is an
annual event com
memorating the an
niversary of Roe v.
Wade. If you be
lieve that abortion
should remain safe
and legal and want
to participate in the
event, then you
should contact
Georgia/Atlanta
N.O.W. at (404)
875-0176 for more
info. They will be
organizing shuttles
to D.C. and coordi
nating marchers
from Georgia.
Disruption
Queer Nation is
planning to disrupt
the Academy
Awards broadcast
this year. They are
being somewhat
vague as to just how
they will do this, but they are threatening to
cause a scene of some sort. They plan on
having members in the audience as well as
backstage posing, and maybe acting as,
technicians and backstage personnel.
Spokesmen for the Awards broadcast are
confident that with over 22 cameras coveri ng
the event, they will be able to counter any
such efforts of the Queer Nation in cognito
protesters and at least prevent their disrup
tion from being aired on national television.
But what if they've infiltrated the camera
crew?
Information
The Athens Regional Library will close its
doors on March 30 to move to it's new loca
tion on Baxter St. at Dudley Dr. The Library
will reopen at it's new location on April 27.
Books checked out on or after March 9 will be
due after the l ibrary reopens. Videos may be
checked out until March 25 and will be due
on March 28. Books will be collected from
the old book drop during the move.
Confrontation
The big news of the week has been the
Red and Black’s decision to run a controver
sial full page ad belittling the horrors of the
Nazi holocaust. Red and Black editor Lance
Helms defended the decision to run the ad
citing first amendment rights. That decision
has been argued in her publication and ev
ery other publication around town — hell, it
even made CNN. The fact that the Red and
Black had the right to run the ad has been
questioned unfairly—they had every right to
run the ad. The question of good taste... now
Demonstrators protested last Friday in response to
the Red S Black's infamous Holocaust ad.
that’s another matter. People have been
asking me what I would have done in the
same situation all week long and I've been
torn between the absurdity of the ad copy
and my natural inclination to stir up trouble. I
finally decided that I was glad not to have the
decision to make. I do know I wouldn't have
given the guy a aiscount on the ad rate...
Discussion
On Monday, March 23, Marc Weatherhorn,
Director of Georgia Citizen Action, will hold a
forum to discuss the American Health Care
system. Citizen Action is supporting the
Russo bill, a comprehensive reform of the
present system of health care in America,
currently in the U.S.
House of Represen
tatives. The forum
will be held at the
Athens Senior Cen
ter at 135 Hoyt St.
and begins at 7 p.m.
Celebration
Tuesday, March
31 is the 1st anniver
sary of the new 40
Watt club. It’s had to
believe that's been a
year...and full o'
memories — the
Flagpole birthday
party that most of us
don't remember the
details of (except for
Joe yelling “Fire!“
s and smearing birth-
o day cake on eveiy-
't one within reach); the
v last Pylon show and
dancing on the
T-shirt stand; the
Mental Health ben
efit and the memorable performance by that
R.E.M. cover band "Fuck!*, and all the other
hot sweaty nights spent watching Athens'
finest and not so finest — hoping our ear
drums could take the continued abuse. It's
enough to make one want to celebrate.
And celebrate we will. The Chickasaw
Mudd Puppies will stomp in the second sea
son of the new Watt. The place to be that
evening, for sure.
Explanation
The Flagpole office cleared out sometime
last week as Steve, Hillary and a bevy of
writers headed out to Austin for the big SXSW
conference. If the phone reports are true
(Steve keeps calling for money), a good time
was had by all. I’m sure you’ll be hearing
about this for weeks to come, but for a taste,
check out the spread on pages 6-7 of this
issue. Tales of debauchery, every one. The
gang, as of this writing, is headed back for the
Classic City, but they were planning to stop in
New Orleans on the way, and though it only
takes about ten hours get from New Orleans
to Athens, it can take weeks to leave.
Meanwhile, I was left here to try to fill the
gap Steve left. It’s been fun, I've read all his
mail, stood up one of his dates, and even
cashed his paycheck to get drunk on cheap
wine. But he can have it ail back. I'm so tired
it took me hours to find headings that rhymed.
I’m going back to the politics page where I
belong, and maybe I’ll find some time to get
some sleep — like during A/C Commission
meetings...
