Should we
talk about the government?
We got a bunch of press releases this past week — most
notably one announcing the end of the SPLOST sales tax
that has provided so much money for the government to
argue about (or flat out waste) over the past few years. It will
no longer be in effect as of April 1. But the arguments over
its use will probably cortir je for years to come.
Athens/Clarke Commission
The Athens/Clarke Commission consists of 10 district
Commissioners and the Chief Executive Officer. The com
mission votes on the f.rst Tuesday of each month, and holds
work sessions on the other three Tuesdays. These meet
ings are helo in the Commission chamber, located on the
mam floor of City Hall. The meetings begin at 7 p.m

Classic Center
Authority
The Classic Center Au
thority is a government ap
pointed body whose re
sponsibilities include the
building and eventual
maintenance of the pro
posed Athens/Clarke civic
center (Yes that Polshek
thing, The Authority is
made up of Chairman L.E.
Blount and members E.H.
Culpepper, Leroy Dukes,
T F. Hollingsworth and RE. Verr astro The Authority usually
meets on the first Tuesday of each month at 4:30 p.m. at the
Ramada Inn.
Ron Barton is coming to Athens. He’ll be doing the
feasibility study of the civic center for us. He’ll be meeting with
the Authority and whatever members of the commission show
up on April 1, at 4:30 p.m. in the Courthouse—room 170. This
should be a fun one. The Authority will also probably have a
meeting on April 7 at 4 p.m. at the Ramada Inn.
Director of District Services Jack Benton; along with former
District Personnel Director Bemie Stills; and his old roommate
for something like that) Charles Strader were all indicted
under the State’s criminal racketeering and corrupt organiza
tion law. commonly referred to as RICO. Under RICO, the
state must prove, at the very least, that these four guys
discussed, planned, or orchestrated the theft of over $300,000
worth of school funds in some organized way, and that the
plans were to be executed within a certain time frame.
Basically, the DA would love to find some kind of proof that,
over coffee and donuts, a conversation something like this
took place: Bernie Stills: “So, Jack, what's the PIN for that
account where we’re gonna’ be putting those divertecffunds?"
Jack Benton: "You mean the funds that you, me, Carol, and
Chuck will be diverting over
the next year or two?" You
get the picture. Well,
maybe you dor't. But that’s
why Flagpole will be bring
ing you, within the next
couple of issues, an in-
depth, play-by-play ac
count of what really hap
pened. That is, if we ever
figure it out ourselves.
National Scene
Seems like the national
press just can’t keep up
this campaign. They put
Tsongas on the cover of
some magazine declaring
him a close second, and
he drops out almost be
fore the issues can hit the
stands. They declare the Democratic race over and sud
denly Brown is coming back strong. This has been a fast
paced campaign, and boy has it been fun. Who ever would
have thought tat Brown would actually get votes? Maybe he
just outlasted the competition. It will be fun to watch.
Marc Wetherhorn officially announced his candidacy
for the U.S. House of RepresentitiveslOth district seat on
Monday, so I guess we’ll be getting in touch with him to find
out if he did any drugs in high school or stuff like that.
President George Bush, after hearing that Flagpole had
offically endorsed his 1992 campaign for re-election.
Athens/Clarke Planning commission
The Athens/Clarke Planning commission meets on the
second Thursday of each month. These meetings are
generally held in the City Hall commission chamber at 7:00
p.m.
The Next/meeting of the Planning Commission will be
held on April 9. That Doctor's office project we kept telling
you was coming up soon has been put on indefinite hold. It
seems that the drainage on the site is just too screwed up.
Sounds like the wnole project is on pretty soggy ground.
School Board
Do we have a cool school district scandal on our hands
or what? Here's the basic poop, so far: On Wednesday,
March 18, former CCSD Superintendent Carol Purvis; former
Special!: Our Endorsement!
After a great deal of thought, we here at Flagpole have
chosen our candidate for president. For his amazing sense
of vision, his commitment to the environment, his tireless
campaign against homelessness, and his lasting devotion
to peace at all costs, we are proud to endorse George
Herbert Walker Bush for President in 1992. We called
George and told him the good news, and he couldn't have
been more pleased. Take that Jerry Brown, you pinko...
That's it for this week. Enjoy the spring weather. Stay
informed and register to vote.

So you want to be a Public Servant...
Athens/Clarke County is looking for people to serve appointments on Public Agency Boards. Several terms on
several different committees will expire in the next few months and you, yes, you could be just the person to fill one
of these vacancies.
Four positions are up for consideration on the Athens Downtown Council. Three Positions are available on the
Airport Authority (one of these positions must be filled by someone living within 5 miles of the airport).
Two positions will be available on the following boards: Family and Children Services, Classic Center Authority,
Historic Preservation Commission, Athens Housing Authority, and the Athens/Clarke Planning Commission. One
vacancy wiH be available on the Personnel Board.
Unfortunately, these vacancies can be filled by the people now occupying these posts. In other words, they can
be re-appointed, and probably will be if no one else applies.
So pick up your application from Commission Clerk Jean Sprattin (613-3031), fill it out, and return it by Friday.
Apnl 17th. Maybe you can make a difference.
