Reggae and creative spelling...
Dearest Flagpole:
You are to be congratulated for your deftness in coagu
lating the various slimy sects and cliquish clans of this
phlegmatic burg into one cohesive rag. The Flagpolish
effluvient [sic] we all so adore has never found a more
pungent outlet.
Sadly, I am consternated [sic] deep m my bowels by the
lack of attention paid to reggea [sic] in Athens. Once upon
a time a dreadneck could skank to Burning Spear or
Eeek-A-Mouse, whose pulsating riffs would shake loose
even the most stubborn of bile. Lately there seems to be a
blockage of the healthy flow of Jah music. (Who can forget
Jah deliverance of Nicaragua's Soul Vibrations fresh from
Babylon customs to the irieights [sic?] of Pepple Beach?)
Since you idren [sic 9 ] at Flagpole seem to have your
fingers firmly on the aural-retentive pulse of the Clashic [sic]
City, perhaps you could relaxative a lickle [sic 9 ] bit and
occasionally let loose some Toots (Hibbert) or something.
Why, "someone' might actually turn a profit by bringing a
name reggae act to town, say, during the Human Rights
Festival. The one thing that would truly round out the Fest
would be to hear the last rousing lines of an alliterative tour
de force rolling off the tougne of Ed Tant just as the wailing
crescendo and pumping bass of the roots radix peeled
back my skull and roared like angels the cry of downpression.
Athens. Georgia, Reggae mecca. Negril north. NOT!
Pardon me, I’ve gotta go pick up a hookah.

And More Vomit...
Flagpole.
This is Mike, guitarist from the band Vomit Thrower.
There are a couple of things that I would like to comment on
regarding ).e. sumrell and John Mincemoyer and their
reviews of our band
By the conviction of both J.E. and John that punk is
dead, it just displays their ignorant, reactionary narrow
minds — the same kind of thinking that sprouted punk to
counter the established "coherant’ or "correct” way of
doing things Sure the era of the late seventies is gone, that
generation has grown up now But as we begin to see more
and more people like you shoving your ideas and beliefs
down everyone else's throats, people will get sick and puke
it up in your face. A La Vomit Thrower. You guys cannot
stand the fact that a band is standing up to the corperate[sic]/

sterilized alternative rock (a contradiction in terms) and
saying “NO! We won’t go along with your silly game,' while
having lots of fun doing it.
Name other Athens bands that have the MORALS to say
what we did say about REM on ( ive radio in REM s
hometown. Not very many, if any at all. While I still enjoy
them, the Ramones, Jello Biafra. John Lydon, etc. have
seen their day. And the 90's will hold good things for bands
like Jack the Lad. Audacity, Thoughtcrime, and Vomit
Thrower.
This is our generation, and we don't want to see it go
down the drain. We do have a lot to say, and we believe in
telling it like it is. not marring it in candy coated offal. If you
can’t deal with reality then you don't have to fucking listen
to us.
And I couldn’t think of a better description than calling
us “anti-peace.' If you had bothered to read the enclosed
lyric sheet more closely, John, you would have plainly seen
that the song entitled “Fuck Peace" is clearly an anti-apathy
tune, not anti-peace. In a sentence the song is saying there
is more to peace than smoking pot and fucking.
Lastly. I read that a ’’leash’ was to be installed on J E.
Sumrell. I do not think that is a wise decision. That is
censorship, something I would hope the Flagpole is against,
even for scum like Sumrell. He should have the freedom to
say whatever he wishes about me or anybody else, provid
ing I have the freedom to respond.

A iesson on CFCs...
Dear Editor:
Environmentalists note that some of the most pressing
environmental problems facing mankind include the deple
tion of the ozone layer, global warming and habitat destruc
tion. While these groupings may be convenient for focused
discussions, it is naive to consider them unrelated. Humans
a r e influential members of a complex ecological web, and
any action taken can have unforeseen repercussions else
where across this web
Take the example of the ozone layer depletion, causes
of which are thought to include two compounds, chlorofluo-
rocarbons (CFCs) and hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs).
You'll recall that the ozone layer is that thin veil in the upper
atmosphere which shields the Earth's surface from tne

potentially disastrous, but largely unknown, effects of ultra
violet (UV) radiation. A recent study [Nature 355,810 (1992)]
suggests that the current loss of ozone actually has a
cooling effect on the Earth’s surface, largely offsetting
greenhouse warming from CFCs. Increased UV radiation
will also influence piant life, but the effects remain largely
unknown. While some species will suffer, some plant growth
will likely be enhanced by increased UV radiation in
creased UV radiation will no doubt have other repercus
sions throughout the ecological web.
Recent political and media attention has focused on
banning the use of all CFCs. While scientific evidence
indicates banning CFCs is prudent, this well-intentioned
act, too, will affect other aspects of the complex web Where
CFCs have been used, society will need to find suitable
substitutes, a very difficult, time-consuming and expensive
task, asLE. Manzer notes [Science, 249,31 (1990)]. While
30% of CFC use is as refrigerants, the majority of CFCs go
into producing the consumer products we enjoy Some
foam padding is still produced with CFCs even though it
does not itself contain CFCs. The circuitry inside rad;cs may
not contain CFCs, but it may have required CFCs during »ts
manufacturing CFCs are involved in numerous manu'ac-
turing processes.
Removing these compounds so entrenched in society
does not come without a price exacted on the environment
A new and less efficient substitute refrigerant would con
sume more energy to produce the same cooling effect
What amounts to an "energy penalty* from the elimination of
HCFCs from insulating foams alone, Manzer estimates, is
equivalent to several billion gallons of additional fuel con
sumed m the United States annually. A CFC ban will
necessitate more coal or oi! burning to make up for the
inefficiency of substitutes. In other words, in our attempts to
help the ozone layer, by burning more fuel, we may oe
unavoidably contributing to habitat destruction, glooal
warming and other environmental woes.
We must stop looking at environmental, political, eco
nomic. and social issues as if they were isolated from each
other Let us truly think globally. It is unavoidab'e that
humans have an impact on their environment throughout
their lifetime. We can become more aware of the repercus
sions of our actions and strive, as best we can, to minimize
the sum total of their long-term effects on our environment.
Tne first lesson is that nothing comes free.
