Linernotes by Hillary Meister
With an Umlaut or
Two G’s?
You've probably wondered yourself ex
actly how to spell the name of this band.
(We certainly have...) Well, according to
Allen Owens (guitar), and Seth Moody (bass/
vocals), it doesn't really matter. We'll use
Lagerhead, just
because it's fun to
make umlauts
above the 'a'.
Lagerhead
have been play
ing around town
for at ieast a year.
If you're a Club
Fred regular
you’ve probably
caught wind of
this band on sev
eral occasions.
You may even get
to know the band
more thoroughly
when Blake
DaitGn, the voice
of Balrog, puts his own version of an Athens
compilation together. Lagerhead is about to
head into Full Moon studios to record tracks,
two of which will be in the compilation.
Lagerhead themselves, though, are busy
remixing a 10-song cassette which they
hope to release within the next three weeks.
Lagerhead's first recording was done at
Suite 16, laying down three tracks, and finish
ing off at Black Box studios with four others —
“Mack Fuck," "Say It,’ “My Bag," and “Pig
Man." “Stump Broke’ and "Justice" are being
done at Full Moon.
When asked what Lagerhead might com
prise, soundwise, Owens said, “It's generally
obnoxious and tongue in cheek, not to be
taken seriously. We have lots of songs about
food, sex and drinking, and a lot of the good
things in life." Moody added, "I play bass
with a sledge hammer."
Lagerhead
played their first
show on Hallow
een, back in Octo
ber of '91. Previ
ously, all four
members played
in various bands
but it was difficult
to pull the informa
tion out of these
two guys since
they considered all
other incarnations
null and void.
Owens is an
Athens native, as
is drummer, Tim
Payne.Moody
came from Dallas, Texas, to check out the
music scene. "I had a jazz scholarship and
decided to play rock instead," Moody ex
plained. "! wanted to find the best place to
do it in. I figured Athens is the place."
Owens and Moody described one of
their more “unusual" songs. “Todd wrote
‘Amberjack,” said Owens. “You can't troll
for amberjack..."
“It’s about a guy that goes on to troll for
amberjack, but he’s drinking the whole day
so he doesn’t know the difference." ex
plained Moody.
"If I don’t get a bite today at least I’ll catch
a buzz..." said Owens.

Outta Orlando
Club Fred is about to be invaded by
Central Florida’s latest sensation, The Spin
Men. Mark your calendar for Monday, May
11, because this is a show not to be missed.
Their last album, Chaos, topped their local
music charts after its release two
years ago, and the band is
now working on a new
album to be released
in the fall. They de
scribe their music as
being an alternative
mix of “hip-funky-
hook- ladened-
dancey-pop." This
unusual blend of
styles is accompa
nied by an equally
strange method of per
forming. Eric Norr, the
classically trained lead
singer, is known for his almost
hyperactive stage persona. His antics in
elude leaping and dancing around the stage
in a wild frenzy, jumping into the audience,
thrashing around, you name it. His
bandmates — Craig Willson (keyboards),
Scottie D. Prince (guitar), James Johnson,
Jr. (bass) and Jeff Ridgeway (drums)—are
somewhat more subdued, but are still ener
getic and intent on delivering one helluva
show for their audience. Jeff Ridgeway de
scribes their performances by telling Athe
nians to expect "a very high energy, very
good, entnusiastic show."
The Spin Men have been causing quite a
commotion in and around their hometown of
Orlando, but they hope to spread their fame
to_ more far flung places with
phaos. (They once made up
t-shirts announcing their
Stuck in Orlando Tour,"
which included a list of
real, and fantasy club
dates.) Besides
playing scores of lo
cal clubs and festi
vals, they've also
graced the stage of
New York’s famed
CBGB's, as well as
many other places in the
New England area. The
gig at Club Fred will be the first
time they've ever played in Athens,
gh this delay is not exactly by choice —
Jeff Ridgeway had driven up once to book a
show, but got in a car wreck. He says that the
band is excited about playing here, and that
he's just happy to be “playing there all in one
piece." If things go as they plan, Chaos might
be the album that breaks The Spin Men
through to the national music scene, turning
their boundless energy loose on unsuspect
ing audiences everywhere.
