The Townie Boy Calendar
Can You Find Elvis?
Rigftt before Halloween, Amelia Thornton,
a Regina Strap band member and Debi Miller,
owner of JezebeNe's were joking about how
somebody should do a townie boy calendar.
You know, the type of calendar that features
cute local boys that hang around downtown
and in the dubs. How that somebody actually
ended up being the two friends, and Dee
Dennis, another friend and employee at
Jezebelle's is a bit of a mystery to them but
here it is, right before the new year and the
"1993 Athens Rape Crisis Center Townie Boy
Calendar* will be back from the printer by
December 16. They decided to give the pro
ceeds from the
project to the Rape
Crisis Center to pro
vide an added incen
tive for people to buy
it. 'They’ve had so
much funding cut.
and so many more
rapes have occurred
in the recent past.*
Thornton said of their
chosen charity The
idea of using men for
a more female ben
efit also appealed to
the three They con
tacted Nancy New
ton, the coordinator at the Rape Crisis Center,
and passed every phase of the project tivough
her to ensure that nothing in the calendar
misrepresented the Rape Crisis Center.
With only one month to coordinate the
project the trio had chosen the men to be
photographed by Wayne Mackie, an inde
pendent photographer and had the finished
prints within two weeks. “We tried to pick high
profile people, guys from popular bands that
people know about town.* Miller said, “and
we tried to represent all of the arts*. They
really didn't think they'd find anybody to do it
when they started, but when they thanked the
guys for agreeing to be in the calendar the
three found marry had the attitude of "No,
thank you for asking,* Thornton said.
They picked a theme for each month and
then designed the photo shoot around it. The
women used many of their own items for
props or found things to use, spending about
$25 total on props, mostly for a pilgrim cos
tume They also set up the props for the photo
shoots. Miller’s thrift-store bought Elvis cos
tume came in handy for October s picture,
which naturally had a Haloween theme. "Since
it reaHy belonged to Elvis, I had to have it,"
Miller said of her trea
sured white satin
jumpsuit trimmed in
silver rick rack and
fringe complete with
stand-up collar.
Michael Stipe was
the chosen "Townie
Boy* to wear the out
fit. He’s even hold
ing Elvis’original mi
crophone and wear
ing his original sun
glasses and shoes
The calendar also
features pictures of
ORT, Flagpole col
umnist, or S-ORT-A Claus as his bio efersto

the fireplace, Greg Reece of Redneck GReece
DeLux wearing his red, white and blue stage

Cobb house representing mardi gras month,

artist month, and September-Greg Nesbitt in
back-to-school gear. The calendar's cover
photo features Jim McKay wearing a t-shirt
that says “Stop rape!! Fight back!!" vtfvch
was taken in the alley near R.E.M .'s office, an
alley where many rapes in Athens occur.
In addition to a
| photo, each page of
c the calendar fea-
| tures the "Townie
Boy’s* bio sheet a
tongue-in-cheek info
sheet he filled out
which includes inter
esting obscure per
sonal facts, the
sponsor’s logo, na
tional rape statistics
and the phone num
bers for the Rape Cri
sis Center, the A/C
county police and
the UGA police.
To help defray the costs of printing the
initial 500copies, Miller, Thornton and Dennis
asked business owners to pay $50 to sponsor
a month. In the back of the calendar, informa
tion about how to avoid date rape, what to do
if you are raped, personal strategies and
important local phone numbers are accom
panied by $10 sponsor ads. The women plan
to reprint another 500 to 1,000 copies after
some of the initial 500 are sold and sponsors
can still donate $10 to be listed by calling
Jezebelle’s. "If we didn't have the sponsors,
and aN the people to donate their time, it
wouldn’t have been possible,* Miller said.
Donated services include the typesetting and
photography and the film and printing of
photographs were done at cost. "We were
clueless to what we were doing - we didn’t get
started on the money and we did all the
pictures before we solicited sponsors, * Miller
said. "It was a lot of work for the three of us
coordinating it Well definitely start earlier
next year." Yes, despite the tight deadline
and problems the three of them plan to
repeat the venture next year and also do a
"Townie Girl Calendar*.
