William Orten Carlton = ORT
Note: this column wiN run a week after it was written, so
bear that in mind. Dear Reader... timeliness is oft in the eyes
of the beholder, so to speak.
And a week of upheaval it was I think of just what all we
went through in the week before Thanksgiving as I sit here
and listen to the chorale from The Ninth Symphony of
Beethoven as it wafts downstairs... It is courtesy of Joe
Greenia. our Upper Hand for the night Thinking for a
moment of my fnend Melissa, wishing momentarily for
Bach instead but thankful for what's playing not in
the mood for WUOG or Disco at The 40 Watt or even
The Flat Duo Jets, all of which are ongoing at this very
moment as I gather my eggs together to write, fearful
of foxes that may lurk just out of sight
First off. tornadoes ate up most of the small town
of White Plains, Georgia, situated on GA 15 only 44
miles south of here But White Plains has seen far
worse Back around 1920 when cotton was king,
there was a branch railroad built from Greensboro
out to White Plains just to ship all the cotton out of
town Scars of that track are still visible along
GA 15 for most of that distance, and you can see
the railroad workers’ houses sitting just far
enough off the highway for a railroad to have
room to have once squeezed in there some
place But Mr Boll Weevil came and munched
down on the crops and White Plains went bust
before the Depression hit a few years later In
1926. there were three banks in White Plains —
since 1931, there have been none, unless
someone has installed a branch of another
Greene County institution there without my hav
ing noticed But White Plains got the last laugh
It was the first city near I-20 and between
Augusta and Covington to legalize liquor sales,
and for several years the taxes from that alone
kept money in the town s coffers The city has a
state-of-the-art water and sewer system that is
paid for; three fire trucks paid for. a new city
hall: paid for; and money in the bank earning
interest while the city sleeps. The tornado caved in the city
hall, but the fire trucks are probably salvageable: they run,
even if they are dented... And the spint in White Plains is one
akin to that of Atlanta after Sherman tossed his fateful match:
A phoenix shall anse from the rubble. I promise to make a
field trip and keep you posted.
Roy Acuff died early the other morning. He was 89
Known as The King Of Country Music, some musicologists
revered Acuff for his talent, but many others held that his
stature was not so much the result of his having been so
good but in his having lived so long and having been a
member of The Grand Old Opry longer than most of the rest
of the cast had been alive Roy joined WSM’s Fnday-and-
Saturday night show in 1938 at the invitation of many of the
then-regulars Whether by virtue of his talent or by his stick-
to-it-iveness, Roy Acuff will be missed His old fnend Minnie
Pearl and he had been dose for over 40 years, but the secret
of their friendship was that they never discussed poli
tics. Minnie Pear! suffered a stroke and may never be
able to perform again I guess Dressing Room # 1 at the
new Opry House. Roy s special one where the door was
always open, will be kinda empty now....
I skip around, don’t 1? In Atlanta a couple of weeks
ago. I happened by Green’s Liquors on Ponce de
Leon one evening, and I glanced in to see if there were
any new beers in stock. A delight caught my eye, and
I returned to Athens with a six-pack of Red Mountain
Golden Ale from the Birmingham Brewing Co in
Birmingham. Alabama in tow My fnend Kevin had
told me that they had begun bottling operations
earlier in the year, but he didn't tell me that their
stuff was wending its way into the Atlanta mar
ket* (He probably didn't even know himself,
come to think of it.) It was so pale in color that I
thought little of it. and spent a couple of days in
limbo before finally icing down a bottle to give
it a try I poured it into a glass for the first
rendering, awaiting a sharp hop aroma There
was none 'This stuff's gonna be pedestnan.' I
thought to myself Pale is as pale does ' Imag
ine. my surprise when it hit my palate and my
whole mouth utterly exploded with flavor I give
it my highest recommendation, and it should be
available m Athens pretty soon through Pre
mi urn Beverage Co of Atlanta Ask your favor
ite package store to order you some Listen, it's
almost worth a trip to Birmingham to have it. but
I've saved you some of the mileage until it gets
| here: None of the bars downtown have it yet that
II know of, but when it rears its head, 01 tell you. Birmingham
Brewing has several other products available in their parts.
Maybe I’ll wnte or call them and find out more for after the first
of the year.
Speaking of which, all of you have a Merry Christmas and
a Happy New Year God willing, I’ll be churning out these
columns next year to tantalize your grey cells when you
return for another year of school, drudgery, musicmaking, or
maybe all three. Have a good holiday. (30.)
