CAMMIS SPY
CONE WITH THE SMOKE
lt’« already May. The world keeps slipping
by. Soon it will be summer. Before you even
grasped the spring, it will be gone. All that
will be left are the memories. Memories that
didn't seem so good when they really
happened.
THE FRIENDS
Think of all those people
you knew in the fall. Some
were your best buds. A day
wouldn't pass when you
didn't hang out. Many have
changed The views, the at
titudes, the image Maybe
these people don’t come around
anymore. They have just faded into
the big blue.
How bout all the people in those fall quar
ter classes. That girl you dated. What was her
name? That cool guy you sat next to. What
ever happened to him? Remember how you
used to feel about your roommates. Maybe diet
your best friend now. Maybe you can't under
stand what possessed you to room with him.
Maybe they’ve just turned into roommates.
What ever caused him to join a frater
nity? You thought you knew the guy. Where
is he now? Do you really like her purple hair
or the earring in her nose? So he calls him
self alternative now. That chick was your
best friend. Now you can’t even find her
number. Nothing.
Maybe you said too much. Maybe it wasn’t
enough. Doesn’t really matter. Yeah, they
seem to be everywhere you go. Too bad you’ve
never met them. Maybe they were pretty cool.
All the apartments, you’ve seen all the dorm
rooms. They all kind of look the same after a
while. Kind of like those faces. All just fad
ing images. If only she would have called.
If only he would call. Maybe you're look
ing too hard. Just tricking yourself. Who
cares? All these new people. All these new
faces. Maybe he sits next to you m journal
ism. Or you met her in Sky’s. Wow, they’re
just like you. Let’s hang out all the time. You
want to live with me next year? He seems
pretty cool. What are you doing to
night ? We should hang out some
time. All these new feces com
ing at you. One by one. Now
you see 'em, tomorrow you may
not. If only she would call.
THE TIMES
It all started with those long
talks on the porch. That first
football game was quite an experi
ence That new, fresh room. What
would the year bnng? So much to expenence.
Good you didn't join that fraternity. Maybe
even better that you did. Where would you be
without it? That 7:50 was so early. How’d you
ever pull that off? Never afpin Remem
ber that math teacher? Man, he was
tough Those walks with your head
phones on and the leaves on the
ground. This campus used to be so
cool.
Those late nights studying.
Sleep a forgotten word. The
study sessions which were really
just socials. Think of all the
cloches you washed. All the kegs
you drank from. Were you really
having fun? Do you remember?
Crazy nights. Those cheese ban that were
so fun. Man, Sky was a big guy. Only a nickel
and it doesn’t matter what age you are. Ev
eryone could get in if you just knew the guy
at the door. So many people running by in
the blur. So many forgotten by daybreak. You
really shouldn’t have ridden in that car. Luck.
Or was it at all?
What a great show. The music would
never sound that way again. Music only you
knew as a knock at your door forced you to
turn it all the way down. There was still noth
ing like that show. Shows turned to disco.
Light to dark. You could have almost slept
there. But, way too many absences. Yet, it was
so beautiful, the stars, the moon, the water,
even the clouds, never the same again.
Dark to light. Stan to fnsbees No one
really one. But, watch the grass Spontane
ous tnps to nowhere. Destinations no one
ever seemed to arrive at. Nights on the porch
smoking cause it felt nght. Looking out the
windows as ochen passed by. What a view.
Couldn’t even match the rock and that flow
ing river, where generations shared that ash
pit. Movies you never thought existed. The
endless conversations drinking coffee.
What mood were you in tonight? Mean
ingless and intense didn't matter. Just watch
the eyes. Told it all. Open till 5. You know
your way around that building so
well now. That same couch for
. hours. Never come down.
Jj Alarm clocks, banquets,
grades, parties where you
were a complete stranger,
parties where you knew it all.
Didn’t matter as long as you
had beer. Scaring at the TV
when the counter hits 7000.
Sunsets spent typing. Due to
day. It’s all due today, yet we all
seem to wait till the last minute. The
alarm clock's ringing, time to wake up, scan
the day.
Or are we already too fete?
They’re about to graduate Gonna have
to find out for themselves.

Shepherds of Hot Music from Atlanta
HERD ON THE STREET
The Shepherds of Hot Pavement are a trto
from Atlanta consisting of guitarist and singer
T. L. Lange, bassist Kevin Goddy and drum
mer Chandler Rentz They've been gaining at
tention by playing dubs in Atlanta and up and
down the East Coast for the past two years
Theyll ploy the 40 Waft Oub June 2.
Last November the Shepherds of Hot
Pavement independently released an excel
lent self-titled debut afourn Since its release,
the band have played frequently in Atlanta
once in Chicogo, and twice in New York c*
CBGB's and at the College Music Journal's
New Music Seminar Response to the Shep
herds of Hot Pavement's music has been very favorable
Ts been kind of a building thing.'says Lange JWe're just wait
ing for our appearance behind the CD to help raise the sates *
Their musk has an obvious British influence and has been com
pared by many to the ethereal sounds of several 'shoegazeT
baids Ike Ride and Curve
1 guess the comparisons arenl wrong... their influences ae
like ours and of course we enjoy their music; explains Lange. 1
was rdsed on the Beatles and the Rolling Stones and I guess be
cause I listened to them. I naturally evolved in the same direction *
The Shepherds of Hot Pavements songs ae written as a col
lective effort AJ three members of the band
cooperate in combining their influences to nur
ture an original idea
The ethereal nature of their music and lyr
ics is a manifestation of the thematic process
by which they write 'We ll have a concept
about how a song is feeling... about what
kinds of images, whether they be derived from
dreamy kinds of things or actual concrete
statements; says Lange 'It depends on how
we ae reacting verbally: Does it sound Kke
something violent? Does it sound like some
thing calming?'
The Shepherds' music translates well in
their Kve performances However. Lange explains, each time they
perform, the songs may be different: The sound that we have Ive
is a little more brash Our live performance has a little bit more
abstraction and a Ittte bit more angle to it '
The Shepherds of Hot Pavement ae a damn fine band, and
they probably won't remoin an unfamiliar regional act fa long, so
If you want to get a head start on what promises to be a powerful
new voice in Atlanta music, go check them out Thursday night
